UK Police Don't Have the Guns to Protect Citizens, Says Local Police Commissioner

November 20, 2015  |

Kevin Hurley, police and crime commissioner for Surrey in the United Kingdom, wrote an editorial for the Daily Mail opining UK police officers' lack of numbers and firepower:

Following the Paris massacre, the Home Secretary has been indulging in predictably tough rhetoric about beefing up Britain’s security, border controls and intelligence.

[But] The truth is that our police, especially the armed response units, remain pathetically ill-equipped and inadequate for the job of protecting the public.

When an Islamist outrage occurs on our soil, as it inevitably will, our forces may have neither the firepower nor the numbers to overwhelm the terrorists quickly before mayhem occurs.

What was striking about Paris was how effectively the well-armed French police went into action, preventing even greater carnage. Yet our officers have nothing like the same strength or weaponry.

Incredibly, there are 40 times more armed officers in France than in the UK. Nor is the equipment used by the police's armed response vehicles (ARVs) remotely adequate for the task. As we saw in Paris, the Islamist killers generally use the AK-47 Kalashnikov, an automatic machine gun that fires 7.62 millimetre rounds at a cyclical rate of 500 per minute.

The British police guns are no match. As a former police officer and soldier who served in Iraq, I know that I would not want to go into a warzone armed with the current standard weaponry issued to the police.

If we are really going to be ready for the fight, we need to stop the police cuts, develop proper response plans with the Army – and above all give armed police the weapons and numbers they need.

You should really look at what's happening with our police and the consequences of militarization before you start wishing for more weapons. It's not pretty. Citizens no longer trust police, police run around thinking they're paramilitary units and over 1000 dead citizens every year. You are much better off they way things are. The response that Brits have had in response to terrorist incidents have been more than adequate.

Leonard, what are you doing out of your moms basement? And I'll bet your off your meds too. The British have been bent on disarming the citizens for years and now it has come full circle When one of their Bobbies gets jumped there is no one to help. Here it's a different story, as can be verified, one of citizens coming to the aide of an Officer. I realize that you have a fear of people who will step up to defend someone, whereas you huddle in fear. "Adequate"? Over 150 people killed is OK with you? Go back under your bed. Blues, Stay Safe.

Hey Leonard. Try lowering your number by 600 and you'll still be too high. Your assessment is so far off base and full of lies but you don't care about the truth so why discuss this any further. You're a pathological liar and likely proud of it.

@Leonard, this is for LEO's, not cop haters. Get outta here troll

Percy @ 11/22/2015 1:37 PM

@ John Redd
Everything Leonard said is true, you don't like it but it's true.
The internet is for everyone as is this site, if it wasn't the public COULDN'T
be here that is also true, you don't like it but it's true. You should also brush
up on the 1st amendment.

Why is it cops always think that anyone disagreeing with them must live in their
mother's basement and have mental health issues? You all say it is us that paint all of
you with a wide brush, sure does seem to me to be the exact opposite. When I grew up
the police treated the public with respect and were part of the community and we respected
and some of us even admired them. That is permanently gone. Your government started
arming you for war and you went. The us v them in your country is 100% the fault of le.
With the advent of personal cameras and the internet, people who used to trust and respect
you have had their eyes opened and see how you treat citizens, break laws, lie, and cover up for each other.

EODK9Trainer @ 11/23/2015 4:49 AM

Percy: Must be nice to be authorized for over 300 million people in the US. You are so far off base and your assumptions make you look completely ignorant. I recently retired from a large agency outside of DC and a large POLL taken shows the majority of citizens were generally overall trusting of our agency. We're not armed for war although officers, especially SWAT, have been better armed to try and keep on par with criminals who historically have been better armed than us. I know you'll continue your hate, no matter how misplaced, and we'll continue to do our jobs.

Leonard @ 11/24/2015 11:30 AM

@EODK9Trainer: Obviously you know nothing that you are referring. The Feds already acknowledge that their numbers of civilian deaths caused by police is inaccurate. In fact, Dir. Comey of the FBI has stated this public ally. However, several news institutions , The Guardian and Washington Post have reported similar numbers. Police have already killed over 1000K citizens this year. @Bob. As a former soldier, I know exactly what it means to defend life even more than cops who want to play soldier on the streets.
