Proposed Calif. Law Would Ban Sale of Realistic Toy/Pellet Guns

January 30, 2014  |

Realistic looking replica guns like this airsoft AK would be banned under the proposed law.
Realistic looking replica guns like this airsoft AK would be banned under the proposed law.

BB guns and pellet guns would have to look clearly different from those that fire bullets to be sold in California under a bill approved Tuesday by the state Senate in response to several recent shooting tragedies involving children.

Senators approved the Imitation Firearm Safety Act on a party-line 22-8 vote, although several senators from each party did not vote. It now goes to the Assembly, according to the Associated Press.

The new bill would require that BB, pellet and airsoft guns sold in the state be painted bright colors or be made transparent to distinguish them from real weapons.

It doesn't matter what color it is, if it looks like a gun, it's going to be treated like a gun. We don't have any other choice. There already have been and will continue to be, gangbangers painting their real guns bright colors or hiding them in cut out "super soakers" to disguise them.

Passing laws like this will have no effect on reducing crime since it apparently not "illegal" to bring or posses a "toy" gun. Just another reason why I left California when I retired after 33+ years in law enforcement. What a waste of time and effort and tax payers money.

Spot on, Jim B. It sounds like they're attempting to make us hesitate when it comes time to protect ourselves. Not a hesitation I'd like to make.

Typical Progressive knee jerk reaction.

LegAdv @ 1/31/2014 9:23 AM

I agree with Jim B., lmmnnart and Chris R. That 'hesitation' Chris R. talks about could very well be an officer's last. I also left CA because of stupid bills like this, among other reasons.

Where did you guys move to? I'm thinking of getting out of California too.

NJmotorcop @ 1/31/2014 2:21 PM

More malfeasance from an ultra-corrupt and incompetent legislature!

I'm no Einstein, but that AK knock off has an orange tip to the muzzle that means it's "Fake". What kids can't play Russian Attack like during the 1980's anymore? Or Cowboys and Indians (First Nations Peoples) for the PC crowd. The people who use these "Fake Guns" to commit criminal acts are criminals. NOT some kid plinking or playing games. Most of the time these Liberals, aide the Offenders, with their "laws". They will make it tougher for Law abiders to get things. But they'll allow hate crimes against whites, and let Illegal Aliens, rape, murder and kidnap? If "Human Life" means to much to these Liberal dirt bags. Why favor Abortion? Why look the other way when people are murdered by Illegal Aliens? If Hitler invaded the USA, and forced us all to speak German, the US people wouldn't take it! But these jerks want English speakers to be 2ed class citizens to Latin American degenerates!

Richard Hightower @ 2/3/2014 6:02 AM

This is what happens when you "militarize" police forces. It is also why I left policing after 10-years on the streets. What law enforcement has become in America today is more of an "occupation" mindset.
