IACP Supports Background Check Deal

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) announced its support for a U.S. Senate proposal that would expand background checks for gun purchases.

The "Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act"—a deal spearheaded by Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Patrick Toomey (R-Pa.)—would expand background checks to gun shows and online purchases.

The legislation would "increase both the coverage and effectiveness of the current background check system and help deny criminals and other prohibited purchasers easy access to firearms," according to an IACP statement.

"Background checks work," said Craig Steckler, IACP's president. "Keeping firearms out of the hands of prohibited purchasers is a key factor in reducing gun violence in our communities and protecting our officers. For far too long, those who were denied the ability to buy a firearm from a commercial dealer were able to secure a weapon at either a gun show, over the internet, or some other form of 'private sale.' Under the provision of Manchin-Toomey, we have the opportunity to finally close many of these loopholes and, as a result, reduce the level of violence faced by our officers and our citizens on a daily basis."

In addition, to announcing its support for Manchin-Toomey, the IACP also reaffirmed its support for the "Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms" Act which will also be considered by the Senate in the near future. This legislation provides law enforcement officials with the tools to investigate and prosecute gun traffickers and straw purchasers, who buy guns for people who are prohibited from obtaining them on their own.

"Straw purchasing and firearms trafficking put guns into the hand of those that are prohibited from possessing them," Steckler added. "The ability to effectively target straw purchasers is critical to protecting our communities."

Is this intentional dishonesty, or just ignorance? There is no evidence of which I am aware that supports the assertions made. In addition, since the # of people who falsify their information in an effort to purchase a firearm they can possess and are then prosecuted is tiny, what purpose does this serve? IACP is a disgrace to law enforcement, and I can't believe anyone would give their drivel any serious positive attention.

I'm sure burglars will seek background checks on themselves before stealing guns. All the brothers, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, and significant others of thugs will get the memo and conduct all their transfers to felons thru FFLs.

The general public is unaware that the IACP does not speak for or represent the average cop on the beat. IACP is more in tune with politics as opposed to the street officer who is more in tune with reality. The statement about going after straw purchasers seems to fit Holder and company like a glove.

Morning Eagle @ 4/15/2013 4:51 PM

You are right T. RET, the public hears that impressive name and thinks, well if law enforcement thinks it is okay then maybe it is. Little do they realize the IACP is nothing more than a conglomeration of highly paid, mostly left wing political appointees that happen to wear a chief's badge. They are not worth listening to but obama's gun grabbers will use this kind of crap to the utmost.

Billy @ 4/15/2013 5:24 PM

I just sent IACP an e-mail and told them to quit sending me press releases, this organization is so out of step with reality that I know longer want to have anything to do with them. They do NOT represent the rank and file, they're political appointees, who shake their heads up and down whenever their politcal masters pull their leashes.

Boston @ 4/15/2013 7:25 PM

We should be going after the folks who prefer to have the mentality ill walk the streets and the Doctors who prefer not to let Law Enforcement know that this person has the capability of harming others. As usual this Government along with the our elected politicians always seem to manage to bark up the wrong tree on more subject matters than I care to remember.

The IACP has NEVER spoken for rank and file police or sheriffs - usually just the opposite. They along with the FOP and others are more political in nature than being law enforcement spokesmen. NOT ONE INCH is my attitude of gun control. There are THOUSANDS of gun laws on he books - how about enforcing some of them? FEDERAL GUN PROSECUTIONS are down 80% under Obama/Holder, and its not lost on irony that Fast and Furious is still a thorn in their collective sides with over 300 Mexican dead. NO we don't support enhanced background checks because there are ZERO "internet" sales and the gun show loophole is a make believe made up term. Go arrest criminals and LEAVE ME AND MY GUNS ALONE !

DEADMAN @ 4/16/2013 1:29 AM

The typical mentality of anybody belonging to the IACP is akin to political pigsh!+,they are not to be trusted with sharp objects or small animals. They are not to be trusted with anything more than playsand and marbels. The owe their mind, body and souls to the local political machine they serve and if left up to them, even the officers wouldn't carry guns.I wouldn't hit a dog in the ass with any card carrying member of IACP,i don't trust them and i have too much respect for the dog.I rank them right down there with politicians and snakes.

Chief P @ 4/16/2013 6:20 AM

The issue with these knuckleheads is they follow the word “international” to much vs. what is going on in the USA. Also Tom kind of hit it on the head and it for sure shadows Eric’s agenda. I am a working chief and not a commissioner so I am out with the officers as much as a paper pusher can be and as a whole our department made up of veterans as well as folks new in this profession see plain and clear that this is more about politics than anything else.

Forget what they are trying to do with new restrictions, if it further restricts a law abiding citizens god given, constitutionally protected rights they are in the wrong PERIOD. The simple fact that it has been allowed to be debated this far is incredible and sad all together. I stopped as a manager of police officers subscribing to the IACP years ago but even now after trying to forget the mess that is their leadership they step up to show their colors again.

Those of you that feel this is a good call or IACP members that feel they can prove a point please explain it to us knuckle draggers how this will prevent crimes or criminals from getting weapons? Last time I checked it was already illegal for criminals to try to secure a weapon, secure a weapon or transfer a weapon without a background check…..

Jim VG @ 4/16/2013 9:25 AM

This group has never supported the views of rank and file officers. It is nothing more than a liberal political mouthpiece. No working officer or deputy listens to a word they say.

[email protected] @ 4/17/2013 9:13 PM

Well. after reading and agreeing with all the prior post, I can't add anything. Blues, Stay Safe.

Troop @ 4/21/2013 6:10 PM

IACP is a political organization of elected and appointed Chiefs of Police and their views are not in line with the views of 99% of the rank and file officers, deputies and troopers in the country. The Chiefs are politicians. Not Police officers.
