The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved a renewed assault-weapons ban, advancing the measure to the Senate floor where it will face intense resistance from Republicans and other gun-rights supporters.

The bill was approved by the committee on a party-line, 10-8 vote. Chief sponsor, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she knows "the road is uphill" for the legislation, but sought to press her colleagues to consider the bill.

"Are we going to stand with the thousands of police chiefs and law enforcement officers who do support this bill? Are we going to stand with the victims of gun violence?" she said, stressing that the bill does not take "any weapons away from anybody" but would ban future purchases.

Republicans, though, described the legislation, which comes nearly a decade after the last assault-weapons ban expired, as an ineffective response to a genuine problem.

this will lower crime by O%, nothing, nada, zip and the statistics prove it. Assault weapons are fully auto or burst, what she's trying to ban is a semi-auto clone of an assualt weapon like Clinton did. That old ban had no effect on crime and experts agree that this won't either.

Feinstein, a hardcore gun rights hater, is also renowned for hypocrisy. While Mayor of San Francisco she (illegally) ordered the Chief of Police not to issue CCWs to "ordinary" citizens, no matter how much they needed or deserved them. At the same time she ordered the Chief to issue a CCW to herself, Feinstein.

Chuck Haggard @ 3/14/2013 4:16 PM

Lies and propaganda.

Only the big city political chiefs support her, I don't know a single working cop anywhere who does.

Chuck @ 3/14/2013 4:42 PM

Who the F#@* are all these thousands of chiefs and law enforcement officers that support her? There has got to be a way to stop these ignorant, sycophant, self serving (because they sure are not serving the will of the people) and get the professional politicians out of office and out of power. Make it an actual crime with an actual punishment and hold those that use firearms to commit crimes accountable. Hell the freaking politicians took the teeth out of the three strikes and use a gun and you're done laws because it was mean and too hard on the criminals, now this. they don't care about stopping crime and they know that this does nothing to stop criminal acts. they simply don't like firearms and want them gone. You want to stop gun violence (never happen but) or at least minimize it, make the crime fit the punishment and make the punishment fit the crime.

Loved watching Senator Cruz make a fool out of her.

Cookie @ 3/14/2013 5:56 PM

Who the hell does Fienstien think she is anyway? It's because of her last assault weapons ban that I lost a Police Edition Thompson fro the American Historical Society that was given to me by my Police Department for being Officer of the year. DOJ came to my house and told me I have to surrender my award or I WOULD BE ARRESTED. The Democrates have gone too far. They only made 500 of these super nice weapons and all thou they could fire, they we just too nice to shoot. Mine was displayed in a glass wall mounted display case and I would have never have put a round through it. Thisw is what's going to happen to everybody if you allow these ass holes to get away with screwing with our constitution and 2nd amendment. I've had it with this old bitch telling us what we can have or can't have just because she doesn't like guns. IT'S NOT THE GUNS FIENSTIEN, IT'S THE GANG MEMBERS WHO YOU WON'T GET TOUGH ON THATS CAUSING ALL THE TROUBLE AND SHOOTING UP ALL OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. That's all I have to say.

rob @ 3/14/2013 6:05 PM

I do not know a single officer in my department that supports a weapon ban. Perhaps some democrat liberal chiefs but no street officer.

DPB @ 3/14/2013 6:43 PM

As a police officer and citizen I support the right of law abiding Americans to own guns and protect themselves. We need to remind these buffoons in the Senate, Congress, and White House they work for us, not the other way around!!! Be sure and vote next year and do not forget what they are trying to do! (if we still have a country to save by then!)

john @ IA retired @ 3/14/2013 8:54 PM

Prosecute criminals. Quit persecuting law abiding citizens.

Coolhandluke @ 3/15/2013 4:11 AM

What LEOs is see talking about? I love how these politicians make up numbers. This 1 LEO that doesn't support this bill and I know thousands of others.

Firecop @ 3/15/2013 4:15 AM

All show. This lady is going after some votes and nothing else. This bill has no chance of surviving through the Senate and the House so why are they even discussing it? DPB has the key issue nailed and at some point we all need to get off of our collective rear ends and show these nut jobs in Washington that they do indeed work for us. Sure didn't happen in 2012....we'll see about 2014.

Ordinary Joe @ 3/15/2013 6:40 AM

I continue to hear officers claim they do not support the gun control legislation being offered by DiFi. Like it or not, that is what our country is facing. Her legislation will not pass, but it is a ruse to gain acceptance of "more reasonable" gun control measures such as universal registration. Just keep in mind the Third Reich implemented "reasonable" gun control measures to improve the"safety" of the general public. Once they registered the guns, they began the confiscation.

I also hear officers claiming it is only the big city chiefs that support gun control. To understand who supports the control go to the Joyce Foundation website and look for the Law Enforcement coalition against gun violence.

Lastly, I would ask that those who support the 2nd amendment and the Constitution remember their oaths to support and defend. Be an Oath Keeper not an oath breaker.

Greg @ 3/15/2013 6:42 AM

What a truly disgusting and ugly leftist. She's got a concealed carry permit, so does her husband. Of course, she's the important person who dislikes the little people becoming "uppity" and acting as if they were citizens and not serfs.

That a politician pretending he's a police chief is pathetic and sure doesn't represent the honest officer. I trust sheriffs to reflect the voters and citizens, not police chiefs who are way too often the drooling lapdogs of the few politicians who gave them their jobs.

kckiss3101 @ 3/15/2013 12:36 PM

When seconds matter the Police are only minutes away. I've been an officer for 30+ years and this saying is still true today. And this fine elected protected person, wants those that are waiting those precious minutes to wait unarmed and unable to protect themselves

Mike @ 3/15/2013 1:15 PM

It is of vital importance that you make your voice heard other then just here. Please contact your legislators and let know your opinion of this useless legislation. Supporters of this previously failed legislation want to continually tout law enforcement's support for it. Make your voice heard and let them know that you are a law enforcement officer/supervisor. We all swore and oath to protect the innocent and this legislation will not help us accomplish this mission! Please consider joining the NRA! I don't always agree with everything they do but they are our allies and the most powerful means to resist this idiocy! Tell them that you are an officer and ask them for the $300.00 life membership you heard about. By the way I'm a Patron Member of the NRA! Be safe!!!

Sgt. Mike @ 3/17/2013 10:04 PM

This bill and it's sponsors are bad for this nation. If Sen. Feinstein and her cronies decide not to exercise their rights, that's fine, but they have no right to tell us that we can't exercise our rights...nor should she be in a position to decide if we have then at all.

James @ 3/17/2013 10:22 PM

Yeah, all these mass shootings lately have been the work of gang members.

James @ 3/17/2013 10:25 PM

If just one Leo's life is saved by this than it is worth it.

OldDawg @ 3/18/2013 6:41 PM

Lets' see-pretty much 100% against this PC BS-as with you all I do not know one single Deputy in my S.O. that supports this BS in any way. Lies and propaganda-that is exactly correct!

D-Ray @ 3/19/2013 6:08 AM

I wish the NRA or even a neutral 3rd party organization would take of poll of actual street cops on this, and not the Chiefs that have to answer to a politician to keep their job. I think they would find an overwhelming number of REAL cops that do NOT support a weapons ban. We know it's all fluff and will have ZERO effect on gun crime. Is there some way to get this done? I'd love to see the look on Frankenstein, Pelosi, Schumer, and the other idiots when they have to face the FACT that real cops don't support their worthless efforts.

Dan Alloy @ 3/20/2013 12:19 PM

OMG Feinstein has a gun? Bet she can't hit a thing. She misses everything she aims at as a legislator.
