NRA Uses DOJ's Own Gun Control Memo Against It

February 25, 2013  |

The National Rifle Association is using a Justice Department memo it obtained to argue in ads that the Obama administration believes its gun control plans won't work unless the government seizes firearms and requires national gun registration—ideas the White House has not proposed and does not support.

The NRA's assertion and its obtaining of the memo in the first place underscore the no-holds-barred battle under way as Washington's fight over gun restrictions heats up.

The memo, under the name of one of the Justice Department's leading crime researchers, critiques the effectiveness of gun control proposals, including some of President Barack Obama's. A Justice Department official called the memo an unfinished review of gun violence research and said it does not represent administration policy.

The memo says requiring background checks for more gun purchases could help, but also could lead to more illicit weapons sales. It says banning assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines produced in the future but exempting those already owned by the public, as Obama has proposed, would have limited impact because people now own so many of those items.

My only complaint about this story is that it is a direct take from the AP. Unfortunatley there will be some who will take this article has a research piece from POLICE Mag, and therefore its official opinion. If a researcher in the DOJ felt it necessary to put these statements in an official memo, obviously they tow the administration line. That's how it goes in DC.

Prosecute and lock up the criminals!! We send our boys off to war and too many come back in body bags or with limbs missing. Society doesn’t see this is cruel and unusual punishment. But let a prisoner miss a hot meal or not have a television and that is cruel and unusual??? Don’t continue to persecute the law abiding citizens. Our society is getting all mixed up. We need to get back on the right track. Being politically correct is not always the correct path.

God Bless the NRA for keeping the feds and the "do-gooders" on their toes.

It just proves there are no "do gooders" high in the administration. They are excellent planners, professional media weavers, master illusionists, and magicians. They lack any sense of reasonableness, honesty, and fairness. Liberalism is killing us.

You would have to be a total idiot if you believe the anti gunners (like Feinstein, Biden & Obama) wouldn't like firearm registration and subsequent seizure. First they target so called "assault weapons". This could include almost every semi auto rifle, shotgun, the majority of pistols and even some pump action shotguns according to their definitions. If these weapons are banned, then they will target the remainder of pump shotguns and handguns (including revolvers). Finally, they will go after lever action and bolt action rifles. All one has to do is look at the United Kingdom. The Second Admendment isn't about being allowed to possess a long, double barrel shotgun locked up unloaded in a safe for sporting purposes after going through an intensive and invasive licensing process.
