Newtown Chief Calls for Assault Weapons Ban

January 20, 2013  |

Top police commanders from several of Connecticut's cities and towns have thrown their weight behind Newtown Police Chief Michael Kehoe, who inserted himself firmly into the gun-control debate last week by calling for a ban on assault weapons.

Kehoe was thrust into the spotlight following the events of Dec. 14, when a gunman armed with an assault rifle killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

It is my understanding that the AR-15 he carried was never used in the shootings.

JD @ 1/21/2013 7:34 PM

4 pistols- no rifle used. Gun control will not work.

JD's right....

Herbert @ 1/21/2013 7:49 PM

This glory seeker is a traitor to the constitution he's sworn to uphold.

Jack Betz @ 1/21/2013 8:05 PM

I assume the ban would include his own department

Gary @ 1/21/2013 8:29 PM

Story changed more than once- sometimes the media gets it wrong, and then no one notices the correctons.
Connecticut State Police Press Release January 18th clarified. The shooter used an Bushmaster 223, also had a Glock 10mm, Sig P226 9mm. Seized from his vehicle was a Izhmash Canta-12 12 gauge Shotgun (seized from car in parking lot).

Tom Ret @ 1/21/2013 8:35 PM

These administrators seem to have forgotten about constitutional guarantees under the 2nd amendment that they swore to protect.

Billy @ 1/21/2013 10:09 PM

Police Chief = politician = do what the Mayor/Council says to keep your job = gun control advocate. Polls show the majority of rank and file LEO's do not support gun control. They know it doesn't work, if it did Chicago would be the most crime-free city in America!

Morning Eagle @ 1/21/2013 10:17 PM

This report is dated 18 Jan 13:

So they finally had to come out and admit it, now that the Coroner has released some info along with Police. An AR-15 Rifle or the so-called "Assault Weapon" was not used in the school shooting. The shooter even tried weeks earlier to buy a rifle but was turned down in the background check. So he had to kill his Mother to steal her rifle. There were initial reports right after the shooting, that Police found the AR-15 Rifle in his car, NOT IN THE SCHOOL. The Rifle was not used. The Shooter went into the school with 4 handguns. Not an Assault Rifle as the media has charged. In the initial hours of this shooting, the Police said they found the rifle in the car. But the News Media had a Pre-Planned Attack already waiting, to ban so-called assault weapons and jumped on that line of reporting, knowing it was a lie. Including people like Piers Morgan who said the shooter used an AR-15 that shoots hundreds of rounds per minute, as if it were a machine gun. Could it be that the Democrat Liberals and the Media were pushing for the new law, hoping they could do it, before the Coroner released the info. I'm betting on it.

Sadly, too many "top police administrators" have become not much more than political hacks, some with very little "street" experience that have been appointed according to who they know, not what they know. Banning so-called assault weapons (that we all know are not actual assault weapons in the first place) is useless as far as actually preventing violent criminals from doing whatever they were going to do but not useless for the agenda of slamming law abiding citizens with more dictated controls and restrictions.

gary @ 1/21/2013 11:58 PM

Morning Eagle- go to the site you cited for the msnbc video... hold your cursor over the 'playing now' icon (or look below the screen)... that story was aired on December 15. A month later state police (the agency doing the investigation) did the press release because of the ongoing confusion/discussion.
I agreed with you... until January 18th.
Pull up images on the Izhmash Canta-12 12 gauge Shotgun... it should look familiar if you watched video of the car-gun seizure.
Or, just keep making your outdated statement- matters not to me. I've already touched a hot stove and wet paint.

Dennis Wenger @ 1/22/2013 3:03 AM

Can you imagine a Chief being a political knee-jerker, wanting to remove the God given Right to defend against Government tyranny in response to the sins of the few? ? Makes perfect sense as both a Progressive Political Hack as well as a Napoleanic. Administrator.

PRM @ 1/22/2013 4:43 AM

Pathetic... just goes to show that liberal anti types exist in every walk of life. That little Constitution thing is just a document of convenience when it suits their agenda. Law abiding citizens should not be punished for what criminals do. Gun control was in place in CT and didn't stop anything. Criminals don't follow the law. Not a hard concept to grasp. I'm just thankful I work and live in a RED Pro-2nd Amendment State. CT officers should be very careful - they could find themselves limited to 7 rounds in their service weapon. Wouldn't be the first time its happened recently as a result of knee-jerk political agendas.

Jim Donahue @ 1/22/2013 5:01 AM

Maybe the CT chiefs should consider banning mentally ill people rather than putting their focus on the weapons that good people use to protect themselves from the bad apples among us. The only folks who would obey such a ban are those who obey the law are good guys.

Michael A. Knox @ 1/22/2013 5:46 AM

After the 1987 Hungerford Massacre, the Brits banned semi-automatic rifles. Did it protect the children? No. 1996, Dunblane, Scotland: A gunman entered a primary school gymnasium armed with four handguns and shot and killed 16 five-year-olds and one teacher before killing himself. The Brits then banned handguns. Still didn't stop the shooting. 2010, Cumbria, England: A spree shooter killed 12 and wounded 11.

Magazine capacity limits didn't stop Columbine. Eric Harris carried 13 ten-round magazines and fired 96 rounds with a ban-legal carbine. He fired another 25 rounds with a pump-action shotgun. Dylan Klebold carried a Tech-9 with a 28-round, 32-round, and 52-round magazine, along with a double-barrel shotgun. He fired only 67 rounds.

What exactly will an "assault weapons" ban accomplish? Nothing substantial. Do these police chiefs not understand that the most dangerous firearm to an LEO is a bolt-action .308 with good optics (i.e., a hunting rifle)? You can't even see who's shooting at you.

James Burson @ 1/22/2013 6:05 AM

Knee-jerk reaction wanting to ban assault weapons, that are also used in hunting..

Tom Ret @ 1/22/2013 7:26 AM

When you hear the politicians claim you don't need 30 rounds to go deer hunting you should know that they have no understanding of the reasons behind the phrase- the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. It was not a reference to hunting but a means by which the people could deter a tyrannical government as experienced under the British. Any politician who balks at supporting the 2nd amendment is acting more like a traitor than a patriot by not adhering to their oath of supporting the constitution.

njmotorcop @ 1/22/2013 7:31 AM

"I assume the ban would include his own department"

It will, unless this political hack "chief" is a hypocrite.

Oh, right, silly me!

Retired Boss @ 1/22/2013 8:36 AM

At least CT hasn't passed any knee jerk laws like they did here in NY. Now even on-duty LEO's can't have more than 7 rds in a mag, they also can't bring their firearms onto school grounds. Gotta love it. I can take a Chief running their mouth, they don't make laws. I can't take knee jerk and anti-gun politicians making laws, that's the disaster.

Deputy Ivan @ 1/22/2013 11:10 AM

Quick, lock the the barn doors, the horses have been stolen! I really can't stand these polititions wearing Police uniforms. They cannot even present a good argument for preventive measures for school safety! It's really rather simple. It's called controlled access and hardening vulnerable areas, before any situation arises.

Dan Joseph @ 1/22/2013 5:11 PM

Good to see so many clear headed Peace Officers with courage. It is good to hear that most who wear the badge realize that they are just citizens granted extraordinary powers and that after 20 or 30 years they must return to being a citizen minus the powers.
Clearly the language of the second amendment protects every citizen’s right to protect themselves and has absolutely NOTHING to do with hunting or sport shooting.
There are only two things that are LAW! The Constitution and Common Law! Statutes are color of law and have the force and effect of law but are not law strictly defined. Don’t forget it. You take an oath to protect the two Constitutions and the LAW.
Treason (the betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery.) against the people is what the Sheriff’s, Chief’s and politicians are committing when they advocate any policy that is against any protected right. When they take office they take the oath as we all do and swear to uphold etc yet do just the opposite and try to get everyone under them to do the same. Tell them to Kiss my Assault Weapon and KEEP YOUR OATH! The GOOD citizens of this country have our back always! My soap box just collapsed so I will have to shut up. Best to all of you.

WVSheepdog @ 1/22/2013 6:48 PM

The consensus is that what has been done (gun control) is not working. If legislating the tool is not working, then the focus is on the wrong issue. Has not anyone else realized that VIOLENCE is not a 'gun' problem, it is a 'people' problem; with or without a gun, PEOPLE commit violence...not the gun.

Greg @ 1/23/2013 5:52 AM

When I hear Police Chief I hear, "Political Lapdog wimp of politicians". These guys have to keep their masters happy or they will lose their job. Sheriffs have to be responsive to the voters/actual citizens and usually don't blather this crap.

This chief needs to change his Pampers and shut up. He's doing nothing but alienating every police officer in his area from the armed citizens (who are usually the only people who will come to the aid of any officer in need).

James Cumming @ 1/23/2013 6:12 PM

This guy is a coward during the entire incident he did not come on camera to make a statement he let the state police and his own PIO handle everthing. Now that the heat is off he grows a pair. What a disgrace

PC9744 @ 1/23/2013 9:04 PM

Throwing darts, number 2 pencils, automobiles, baseball bats, boxcutters, ninjas, Tasers, batons, etc... = "assault weapons". We may as well ban those items and the like, since the term gets thrown around so loosely.

Here's the definition from Wikipedia (so it must be true- haha): "An assault rifle is a selective fire (selective between fully automatic, semi-automatic, and burst fire) rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine."

So I suppose our armed forces and SRT's should lay down their arms...seriously, these media hacks need to do their homework or at least know definitions of the terms they demonize. The verbage used in the "1994 Assault Weapons Ban" did not help the cause. And by the way, I agree with the consensus of the above comments.

Tim @ 1/25/2013 11:33 AM

wow this is refreshing.. not the assault weapon ban, but the disapproving responses from you guys.. time to take our constitution back

Sgt. Mike @ 1/27/2013 8:57 PM

This is silly, if gun control would make the streets safer. then we should make cocaine, heroine, and methamphetamine illegal so we can rid our country of drug related deaths.

The simple face is, laws can never regulate behavior, they can only establish consequences.

Our nation will only disarm honest people and make them vulnerable to those that would harm them.

Jerry Webb @ 1/28/2013 5:31 AM

A number of years ago, I was a mamber of a "SWAT" team that was dispatched to an active shooter in a factory. The weapon used was a pump action shotgun with a bird hunting plug limiting it to three rounds. He shot and killed 2 and a number of wounded and his own suicide. "Assualt weapon" bands will not change anything, not even one life. Several weeks ago, in China, a demented person killed 22 people with a knife. Lets ban them also. If someone is going to do this, the best response is having armed personnel on the scene before the shooter arrives.
