Chicago Vows To Fight Concealed Carry Ruling

With parts of the city in the grip of gang warfare and spiking homicide rates, Chicago aldermen urged state officials to appeal an appellate court's decision tossing Illinois' ban on concealed weapons, with some suggesting they might launch their own legal battle.

Outside a City Council meeting Wednesday, one alderman after another said they are so concerned that lifting the ban could lead to more gun violence that they are willing to write a new city ordinance even if it triggers a lengthy and expensive court fight.

"I believe that the city would be well within its rights to prohibit that (concealed weapons) within its borders, and then we'll take that up to the Supreme Court," said Alderman Joe Moore.

Just an observation here, but the idiots who are killing each other and holding parts of Chicago in "the grip of gang warfare and spiking homicide rates" are for the most part already carrying concealed and illegal weapons, and committing crimes and murders; so whether or not concealed carry is authorized for approved licensed civilians will have absolutely zero effect on the criminals in question.

Rick @ 12/13/2012 4:41 PM

Yeah, waste taxpayers money by appealing the ruling because criminals stand in line to obtain permits to carry concealed weapons. They should be applauding the ruling and assisting citizens in obtaining their CCW (as soon as the system is set up); it will generate needed funds for the state and drop crime in their city.

CT LEO RET @ 12/13/2012 4:43 PM

Stop wasting tax payer money to fight this. Chicago city government should embrace this. as WS said it's mostly the criminals commiting the gun crimes. They are not licensed gun owners. I think this will have the opposite effect, when law biding citizens are allowed to carry, crime will probably go down. call me crazy, just a thought.

S Costa @ 12/13/2012 4:43 PM

Actually, it may have a little effect on the criminals and violence may go up slightly but it will be violence Against the Criminals from the Legally Armed Citizens who choose to exercise their right to defend themselves !! That little Violence spike I am OK with. Sad to see them waste Tax Payer Money in lawsuits that are moronic and pointless ...

Bobby Mo @ 12/13/2012 5:07 PM

Take the money they would use to "take this to the Supreme Court" and give free CCW classes to the citizens. It has been said that the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. We would be better off teaching gun safety and allowing citizens the option to protect their families.

Curt @ 12/13/2012 5:13 PM

Chicago to fight? We expect no less from such an ultra-corrupt regime!

bambam @ 12/13/2012 5:17 PM

I agree with all of you. The spike in homicides is from the ones that choose to use and obtain weapons illegally and no matter what the law says, they will still steal guns and use them for their gang activities. When only seconds matter, the Police are only minutes away has been one of my favorite quotes as my 30 years as LE. The city is more concerned for its preconceived notion on gun bans and control than on the safety of its citizens

Mike @ 12/13/2012 5:30 PM

Well there is a reason Cops carry guns, if the bad guys did not have guns Cops would only need batons, So since we cannot have a Cop for every good citizen arm the Good Citizen and let them help the Cops against the bad guys. What a concept.

Red @ 12/13/2012 5:40 PM

Chicago needs to deal with gangs not with honest people who seek to arm themselves as they know that the police cannot be everywhere at all times.

Bill @ 12/13/2012 6:01 PM

Remember people, "Gun Control" is not about guns. It's about CONTROL.

John R. Fonseca @ 12/13/2012 6:53 PM

When they finally get concealed carry and the crime rate drops drastically, just like it does in every other city and state, that institutes concealed carry, then what will they use as an excuse for gun (citizen) control?

Sgt. R.W. @ 12/13/2012 6:58 PM

What can anyone expect from the corrupt Chicago style politics of Obama and company, as well as his former chief Rahm? If they could disarm all the honest citizens in the country, they would. So, for now they will settle for the backward "city of wind". (one of the states with the highest homicide rates due to excessive control of the legitimate gun owning citizen.

JJ Golliday @ 12/13/2012 7:58 PM

After serving 30 years as a Texas Peace Officer all I have to say is: "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns!" Criminals have, are, and will continue to carry concealed weapons. Sad but true. JJG

Big Will @ 12/13/2012 8:14 PM

If the Politicians allowed the Police to do their job I'm certain crime would drop drastically and the respect of old would return.

F.D. @ 12/13/2012 9:00 PM

What ordinance is in force for criminals who conceal their weapons? Oh, that's right! Criminals carry concealed anyway....so why should amyone bitch and complain about a law abiding citizen wanting to carry for self defense in case it's needed. It will definitely put both on the same playing field. Politicians need to wake up. It's not like their haven't been any shootings in Chicago this year....

R.A. Chap @ 12/13/2012 10:17 PM

It is not the law abiding citizen with training and a proper concealed permit who is killing each other. The intentions of the alderman however good are misplaced. The thugs will not get a permit, they will not qualify. Law abiding citizens should be able to protect themselves and their family!

Frank @ 12/14/2012 5:41 AM

So the innocent taxpayer pays the price just because Mayor, Aldermans, Chicago PD and DA can't control the out-of-control streets of Chicago.

Juan 10-13 @ 12/14/2012 7:43 AM

Hey Chicago....the time has come to rid yourselves of ALL of your political cement and take back YOUR hometown. I can only speculate the criminal activity is apparently endorsed throughout your system because it has grown and continues to CONTROL YOUR governing body! A garden needs to be nurtured, watered and fed in order to exist! You elected LEADERS to protect and defend you from the criminal element and appears like they got castrated. I don't know....I'm only guessing!!!!! Freedom of speech my brothers!

Bill D @ 12/14/2012 9:03 AM

R.A. said "The intentions of the alderman however good are misplaced." WRONG - the aldermen have NO good intentions, never had, never will. The only intentions of the aldermen are to enrich themselves and their cronies as much as possible, by whatever corrupt means they can use, but not get caught. An armed law-abiding person is a citizen, a disarmed law-abiding person is a subject. Chicago politicians prefer to rule over subjects, they are terrified of citizens. Why do all the aldermen have CCW's, but forbid the same right to residents of their city?

John @ 12/14/2012 10:23 AM

Why do we have a Supreme Court? They never seem to have any enforcement behind their rulings unless they side with the politically correct liberals of this country. The corrupt shithole of Chicago will never follow the U.S. Constitution or this U.S. Supreme Court ruling. If Chicago officials ever choose to have such a thing as a concealed pistol license, the issue process will be so discretionary, burdensome, and expensive that most people will not be able to get one anyway. The only people that may be able to get a license will be upper middle income to rich people who are very politically connected.

W. S. Weber @ 12/14/2012 5:49 PM

I understand where you're coming from John, but the same argument was made regarding DC. I have friends there who say the change has been slower than they'd like, but at least they can now get a firearm, and have in their house in a functional state among other things. Their biggest complaint right now is that it seems the local GOV in DC doesn't even know or understand what the current policy is. I sure as heck see the same type of stonewalling and poorly thought out/written policies, and restrictive discretionary issue policies coming out of Chicago and the state of Illinois until they get sued again.

JM @ 12/17/2012 8:01 AM

Wow Chicago, you are a disgrace... Wanted only the criminals to be armed, outrageous!

Sgt. Mike @ 12/19/2012 9:07 PM

Actively enforce the laws already in place with stiff penalties and require a permit process for concealed carry. Everyone else has this figured out already, why is Chicago leadership so hard headed?
