Southern Arizona Park Rangers Armed With M14s

February 28, 2012  |

Law enforcement park rangers patrolling Arizona's Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and escorting tourists to its scenic, remote, and dangerous areas are now carrying M14 rifles as protection for run-ins with smugglers, reports Yahoo News.

The park has begun offering guarded van tours to Quitobaquito springs, which is part of the 69% of the remote border park west of Tucson that has been closed to the public since Kris Eggle, a 28-year-old law enforcement park ranger, was shot and killed while pursuing drug runners armed with AK-47s in 2002.

If the present Administration would get off their hands and protect the people of the United States with US MIlitary troops, and other types of LEO's along the border we wouldn't need to give Park Rangers M14's. Does anyone in Washington read the Constitution? I said it before, if the White House was located in a border town instead of Pennsylvania Avenue the problem would be corrected yesterday!

TripWire @ 2/28/2012 9:01 PM

Absolutely Frank, If we would stop them at the border we wouldn't have to arm park rangers. The current administration is going beyond the Constitution with our liberties (ie: NDAA of 2012) and forgetting that they are bound by that same Constitution to protect our borders.

Frank @ 2/29/2012 3:49 AM

Tripwire the interesting part of this is the Park Ranger that pulls the trigger will end up in a legal mess. Just like the BP guys did a few years back. I guess aliens means people running around from another planet.

Scott from Florida @ 2/29/2012 9:56 AM

The problem is, We the People need to understand our current Government and POTUS will not "get off their hands and protect the people of the USA" because they don't wish to secure the border. The facts are, our own government filed a law suit in Federal Court in an attempt to stop the sovereign State of Arizona the right to protect itself. The U.S. Govt sided with a corrupt third world country rather than protecting Arizona's right to self preservation. This is a violation of the very oath they took and flat out treason. Holder and Obama have levied a suit against the State of Arizona when they are well aware of the criminal issues Arizona is having. Wishing our Govt would get off its hands and protect the Constitution is like wishing a mass murderer show mercy. Never gonna happen as long as this current administration is in power. See you at the polls.

While the statemet that our gov. should be better protecting the border is true. Don't forget that Park Rangers are police officers just like the rest of us and they deserve the same tools available to every other law enforcement agency. They also deserve for their administration to back them while they are workingn such a dangerous beat.

As a 29 year Park Ranger for a state agency I'm armed with a pistol, shot gun and an M 4 carbine. It's about time they got the tools they need. We can get into some serious stuff and more than likely we are alone with back up over 30 min away. Rangers and Fish and Game Wardens fit the FBI profile of officers most likely to be asaulted, alone, remote areas etc. Add to that budget cuts and the White House failing to protect our Nation's borders, well it just aint a walk in the park anymore.

Frank @ 3/1/2012 4:36 AM

I agree the Park Rangers do need the same weapons as any other Agency. The problem is that if the Government did their job they we pay them to do. You would not need M14's and the local Police would be handling normal calls and not be involved or assisting in Illegal trafficking, Drug Cartel raids. It's not a walk in the park and it should be! Park Rangers should not have to worry about major criminals using the parks as weed farms.

Doug @ 3/3/2012 9:04 AM

It's a shame that people have to be led on a tour to OUR NATION'S monuments/forests/parks by an armed guard to protect them from violent people from ANOTHER NATION.

Gawain @ 3/26/2012 10:10 AM

Arming Park Rangers with M14s makes absolute sense. They do foot patrols in the wilderness more than anyone else . Poachers, smugglers, drug farmers all use the backcountry for operations, many are white locals believe it or not.
