I agree with the alderman in the respect that law abiding U.S. Citizens have the right to keep and bear arms to protect themselves and their property. He is encouraging them to pursue their right lawfully. My respects to the lady who got her CCW and gets out and trains with her pistol monthly. Wish honest people in all neighborhoods had the same respect for firearms and dedication to be proficient.

If you go to the comments to the article itself, you see that those opposed to the alderman's proposal are quoting claims of the liberals that John Lott and Gary Kleck have proven to be factually wrong. But, as Jeff Snyder has written, gun ban advocates believe violence is morally wrong, even in defense of one's self. Snyder argues that that belief is why gun ban advocates are not swayed by the facts. To them, the facts are irrelevant in the face of their moral imperative. I'm afraid that we will never win the debate. The only thing we can hope for is legislative dead-lock or a conservative majority in Congress and in the state legislatures.
