U.S.'s first hate crime database introduced in California

August 01, 2000  |

In California, you can do extra time for committing crimes based on gender, religion, race, nationality, disability, or sexual orientation. And the Golden State's officials have a new weapon against hate crimes. According to a report by APBnews.com and the NLECTC Law Enforcement & Corrections Technology News Summary, HATE (Hate Crimes Analysis Tracking and Evaluation) is the first hate crime computer database in the United States, which will be used by police to assist them in catching hate-motivated criminals.

The database will provide data on crimes and suspects, as well as other pertinent information. It will also enable police to create suspect lineups, using database mug shots. HATE would also help law enforcement deal with the technological expertise of hate organizations.
