Calhoun County, AL, Sheriff Larry Amerson says his department is returning its tracked armored vehicles because of new federal guidelines from the Obama Administration, reports al.com.

The tracked vehicles, which are armored but have no artillery or weapons, were acquired in 2004 through the federal 1033 program, which transferred excess military equipment to civilian law enforcement agencies at no cost - only shipping and handling fees.

In a statement, Amerson said losing the vehicles will make both police and the community less safe.

"The absence of these vehicles poses a serious threat to law enforcement and citizens if we were to face another active shooter incident," he said.

I am at a loss to understand the reasoning behind the Obama Governments decision regarding the safety of LEOs and the general public. There is something very wrong when governments reduce safety for what appears to be appeasement. I would have thought that public safety (includes LEOs) would be a high priority in the current climate of domestic and international violence.

Dumb, plain dumb. Will the Sheriff get back costs for transporting to him and painting them etc? Tired of DOJ (atlas Obam's DOJ) interfering with police and doing more harm then good. We all (police departments) should tell the FEDS too stick their money where they sit and keep them from making stupid rules that control local police. Its not constitutional and wrong for them to have any say at all. This is what that department gets for sucking up to the $ bribes of the Feds.

Obama feels that if the thugs have the upper hand, it will even the odds for them. You have to remember too that many departments have excess military equipment such as M-16's and M-4's. It won't be long before he demands those be turned in as well. You also have to understand the mindset of the Obama crowd. Whenever a thug gets killed by police, his administration runs to the funerals and the cameras saying the police over reacted. But when an officer get killed by the thugs, SILENCE.

AJ @ 11/18/2015 7:18 AM

After watching the outgunned and unarmored french police take it on the chin in the Paris attacks the chief should reconsider. The whole police militarization bull is going to get good people killed. One up-armored vehicle per 100,000 citizens is not enough to suppress the entire population. But that one vehicle is enough to take the fight to a heavily armed bad guy, rescue downed parties, and stop the killing.

Once again the lame POTUS has shown his total disregard for Law Enforcement. He is more concerned with aiding the law breakers and terrorist then with protecting this country. He should be impeached and imprisoned for the acts of treason. Blues, Stay Safe.

Leonard @ 11/18/2015 7:55 PM

What a load of crap. That department needs a tank as much as I do. It amazes me how much police departments yearn to be quasi-military units. I admit, I chuckle when I think about it, because many of the officers couldn't handle real rules of engagement and finally the accountability when you screw up.

percy @ 11/18/2015 10:48 PM

@Steve, @kevCopAz, @Fed Cop 1, &@[email protected],
Is there anything you people don't lay directly at the feet of your President?
Could it just be that he's black, and you all simply don't like black people?
Do you really think he worries about every little thing that seems to send all of
you into apoplectic fits? Your comments and logic on this and well.... pretty much
anything else are laughable.

Nutz149 @ 11/19/2015 5:39 AM

@ Leonard - Sorry that you are misinformed about the subject that you are commenting on. It is not a tank, the article clearly states that there is "no artillery" on the vehicle. I would also guess that you may not actually know what police "rules of engagement" are or why officers are trained to act the way that they do.
@ Percy - If you read the comments carefully you would see that no one has mentioned race except you. Why do you presume? Also the article again clearly states that the recall of life saving equipment was prompted by the Federal Government. Now you are correct this could be a order from a lot of different people, but in the end Obama is in charge of the Government...... is he not? There for the blame would logically land at his feet.
Love the trolling comments guys, be safe blue and browns.

[email protected] @ 11/19/2015 10:46 AM

@ Percy & Leonard- do you guys still share the shower like you do your brains? Once again you both have inserted comments that were never in the original posts just to bring racism to play. And your positive that all of these posts are by White people? Heaven forbid that some of us are shaded just a bit, as that would ruin your little world, wouldn't it? Blues, Browns and all, Stay Safe.

Yes dear, the fact that you're all not running around sceaming the n word doesn't mean that le or these forums aren't rife with racism.
By the way why did you capitalize W when refering to white people?
