S.C. Cop Crashed Cruiser Off-Duty While DUI

February 02, 2011  |

Former North Charleston (S.C.) Police Officer Nicholas Lomma has been fired and charged with driving under the influence, after crashing his cruiser while off duty and intoxicated early Saturday, reports The Post and Courier.

Lomma, 25, was charged Saturday by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the agency that investigated the crash. Chief Jon Zumalt said he and the department were embarrassed by the incident.

Lomma violated several agency policies, including driving a city vehicle while intoxicated and driving a city vehicle outside a 10-mile radius of the city limits while off duty.

The officer apparently swerved to miss a deer, before running his cruiser into a ditch.
