U.S. Prison Population Increase Largest in Four Years

The nation's prisons and jails held 57,600 more inmates in June 2003 than at the same time the previous year, according to a recent report from the Justice Department. The number of state and federal prisoners increased 2.9 percent over this period, the largest increase since 1999.
