Memorial Quilt Planned for 9-11 Victims

June 06, 2002  |

Taking a cue from AIDS activists, who memorialized victims through a series of quilts in the ‘80s, a national project has formed to create quilts honoring those who died in the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The 911 Memorial Quilt Organization plans to create seven separate quilts, one each for the New York Police Department, the Fire Department of New York, the New York/New Jersey Port Authority, New York Emergency Medical Services, Pentagon, and a special quilt that will be presented to the White House on behalf of all victims of the attrocities.

Organizers plan to take the completed quilts to New York and Washington on the anniversary of the attacks this September. They also hope that the largest of the quilts will be accepted into the collection of the Smithsonian Institution.

Monetary donation can be sent to: Lamb of God Church/America’s 911 Memorial Quilt, 19691 Cypress View Drive, Ft. Myers, Fla. 33912. Quilting supplies, including fabric, sewing notions, and ink cartridges can be sent to: America’s 911 Memorial Quilt, 9300 W. Terry St., Bonita Springs, Fla. 34135.
