Backing Up is Hard to Do

June 1, 2006

Ask risk managers to tell you what causes the majority of vehicular accidents, and they will all sing the same tune: "Backing Up Is Hard To Do."

Patrol Cars: Class of 2006

May 1, 2006

Yes, I've seen a lot of police cars over the years, but I don't think I've ever seen a better-looking crop of patrol cars than the class of 2006. Each one of these cars has great lines. They look both modern and a bit retro. And they have plenty of engine to get the job done.

Distracted Driving

March 1, 2006

The other day a friend of mine had a rear-ender on duty that was caused by his responding to his MDT (Mobile Distracting Terminal) or MDC (Moving Destruction Computer) or whatever they are called.

Official reports say that at about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday March 3, Officer Richard Kunz of the Schertz (Texas) Police Department pulled over a black Toyota Corolla on Interstate 35.

IACP 2005: Best of Show

November 1, 2005

The last few years it has seemed that the exhibitors at the International Association of Chiefs of Police were escaping from a computer expo. On the patio outside the Long Beach Convention Center there was a clear reminder of what the conference/trade show inside was all about. There, the Long Beach Police Department parked three tactical vehicles, and officers attending the recent Tactical Response Expo (TREXPO) West show had to pass by each to get into the doors.

Pros and Cons of Front-Wheel-Drive Police Cars

April 1, 2005

To say that Ford’s Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is dominant in the police pursuit vehicle market is a gross understatement.

Driver’s Education

April 1, 2005

This column is generally about defensive tactics or ways to give yourself an edge in a gunfight. Each month, you flip open your Police magazine and on or about this page there’s a column by a martial artist that tells you how to stun an attacker with a forearm blast or an article about what to do when your trusty sidearm jams and all hell is breaking loose.

How to Equip Patrol Cars

April 1, 2005

Most law enforcement agencies have been through the process of buying and equipping cars many times before. But just because you’ve done it before doesn’t mean you have to do it the same way every time. There are many choices when it comes to outfitting your patrol cars with lightbars, partitions, deck lights, and all the other accoutrements that make cruisers patrol ready. Maybe it’s time for your department to look into the different options.
