NYPD to Give All Patrol Officers Body Cameras by End of Year

February 01, 2018  |

The NYPD is accelerating its body camera program and will outfit nearly 18,000 patrol cops with the devices by the end of 2018, a full year ahead of the original schedule, city officials said Tuesday.

At a news conference at the 79th Precinct in Brooklyn, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill and other officials said money for fast tracking the body camera program will be part of the preliminary budget scheduled to be announced on Thursday.

De Blasio couldn’t give an exact dollar amount on the cost but indicated the money had been appropriated.

The city already has about 1,453 officers using body cameras as part of a pilot program supervised by a federal court monitor. The pilot program began in April 2017 and is used in 20 police commands, Newsday reports.

Yeah, There is something in this for de Blasio or he would not have secured the money for them. I'd watch this situation very closely.

The biggest corrupt politician in the United States! He gave himself a 15% raise yet hates the cops and offers zeros. Stop writing tickets and generating money for these asshole liberal politicians. He has been hiding and stealing money since he got in. Nyc is a dump

I agree if De Blasio is doing the norm Dem/Lib thing he has a piece of the camera company or a "political friend" does and the citizens will pay too much in the end. I agree there is good and bad with these camera but I wonder why every field officer has to wear one but the command staff doesn't, or the major or council. Why they are "serving the city" and being paid by the tax payers we should see what they do all day, who they take to and what BS they are up to. Granted this will never happen and we all know why. "Do as I say not what i do" is the rule these clowns go by.
