San Diego Police To Monitor Live Stream from Schools

San Diego Police will soon be able to monitor live streaming video from 70 of the city's roughly 200 campuses, an added measure of security in the wake of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The officers' ability to monitor the video from their patrol car laptop, possibly unique in the state, was among the reasons Mayor Bob Filner said Monday that the city is well-poised to protect its children.

Police Chief William Lansdowne disclosed the video measure during a City Hall news conference Monday where he, Filner, school officials and others sought to allay concerns of worried parents, students and school workers.

"We want to assure the community we are doing everything we can," Lansdowne said.
