Prison Guards Main Source of Smuggled Cellphones

California corrections officers are the main source of smuggled cell phones that reach inmates in the state's prisons, according to legislators studying the issue.

The cell phones reach inmates, because officers staffing prisons can enter without passing through metal detectors, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Union officials say they don't necessarily oppose searches; they also cite a work requirement that corrections officers must be paid for "walk time" — the minutes it takes them to get from the front gate to their posts behind prison walls.
