California Public Safety Broadband Network Gets $50.6M Stimulus Grant

One of nation's first dedicated public safety broadband networks for police, fire and EMS first responders received a $50.6 million federal stimulus grant for its build out, the California Chronicle reports.

Northern California public safety agencies are cooperating with Motorola as part of the Bay Area Wireless Enhanced Broadband (BayWEB) project, which will provide Bay Area emergency responders with a dedicated and prioritized broadband communications system.

The system will allow public safety personnel to transmit information more quickly and efficiently, during both day-to-day operations and major emergencies. As one example, new broadband applications would enable officers to transmit video images from an accident scene.

It would be one of the first systems to use the 700MHz spectrum vacated by television stations.
