Cops Compete in Baker-to-Vegas Relay

April 29, 2005  |

The 21st annual Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay Race welcomed 228 teams in 11 divisions made up of agencies from several Western states for the desert run. 20,000 people, including runners, support staff, and volunteers, were involved in the race.

The event began on Saturday in the California desert town of Baker, continued overnight in freezing temperatures, and ended Sunday in Las Vegas, Nev. Teams of 20 took turns running about six miles each to complete the 120-mile, 20-stage foot race across the Mojave desert and through a mountain pass to reach the finish line.

Among the winners were the Murrieta (Calif.) Police Department with a combined 16 hours and 38 minutes for the under-100-officer-agency category and the Long Beach (Calif.) Police Department with a combined time of 15 hours for the “mixed” male and female team category.

The Baker-to-Vegas relay involves team building, exercise, and training—a combination that keeps many participants coming back year after year.
