The number of high school students staying home for fear of violence at school has increased in the last 10 years, although a government study reports that violence at schools has actually declined in the same period of time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says students’ fears stem from memories of the Columbine High School incident and other school shootings in the 1990s.

According to the CDC survey, 5.4 percent of high school students skipped at least one day of school because of safety concerns in 2003, compared to 4.4 percent in 1993.
