Police Say 13 Dead in Mass Shooting at Oregon Community College, Suspect Dead

October 01, 2015  |

Oregon State Police say 13 people were killed and 20 others wounded when a single gunman opened fire on the campus of Umpqua Community College this morning. Several sources, including Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, say the shooter, 20, is one of the dead.

A school official said the attack occurred at Snyder Hall. The first 911 call came at 10:38 a.m. Oregon State Police say the shooter was engaged by law enforcement, but it is not known if he was killed by officers or killed himself.

Nearby residents told OregonLive that 20 ambulances and 75 police cars, including police officials in their private vehicles, responded.

Police said in a release that staff and family were being taken by bus to the Douglas County Fairgrounds to meet family. Emergency personnel are urging the public to avoid the area as it could hamper emergency efforts.

The FBI is sending agents and specialty personnel from its offices in Medford, Eugene, Salem and Portland to assist with the active shooter investigation in Roseburg, says agency spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele.

At least 100 officers are reportedly on the scene.

Another "Gun-free Zone" becomes a preferred target.

Tom Ret @ 10/1/2015 3:48 PM

If the liberals and anti gun advocates could only get another gun law passed these incidents surely wouldn't happen. They can point to Chicago and other cities where the strict gun laws have worked so well (sarcasm off). I haven't heard any mention of the shooter's motive for asking victims to state their religion before shooting them. Could it be that he was influenced by ISIS looking for a nice soft target for mass murder like a gun free zone?

Kojack58 @ 10/1/2015 5:03 PM

This is horrific. At least the perpetrator is down. It's too bad he killed so many before being stopped. Stay safe all.

Another opportunity for Obama to engage in "automatic anti-gun" laws. Linear thinking that excludes variables gets votes.

Very first comment by Tschako says it all. A gun free zone. Prayers go out to all families of victims. Good job to the officers who responded, and cleared the campus.

Very tragic and sad. My condolences to those that lost a son, daughter, father, brother, sister. Sadly the Democrats have already started to make gun control a priority due to this incident. Obama has stated in the papers the he will politicize this event to push for more gun control. Sadly the Dems don't even offer any condolences to the families who someone in this shooting. The politicians using this for their own agenda should be ashamed of themselves, and the same for all the anti gun groups. You are all shameful!!!!!!!!!!!

Sherry @ 12/4/2015 4:34 AM

More gun laws will do nothing but limit the public to defend its self. The gun man do not follow gun laws or any other laws. Get that. We need to make it mandatory that all of us need to know how to use a gun.
