Video: Officers Take "Heavy Gunfire" in Ferguson

August 19, 2014  |

An evening of peaceful demonstrations in Ferguson, Mo., on Monday against the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown descended into another night of chaos with police coming "under heavy gunfire" and leading to the arrest of more than two dozen people. Watch video here.

Capt. Ron Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said early Tuesday that 31 people were arrested, four police officers were injured by thrown rocks and bottles, at least two people were shot, and two fires were set during a night of clashes between police and protesters.

Johnson said "officers came under heavy gunfire" during the night, but said officers did not fire a single shot. They "acted with restraint and calm," he said.

Amid the tense situation, a group of people trying to keep the peace locked arms and managed to position themselves between the more confrontational protesters and the police line. However, while many among the protesters clamored for calm, some in the crowd appeared determined to provoke an incident, USA Today reports.

Johnson said some of those arrested were from as far away as New York and California — part of what he called "a dangerous dynamic of the night."

Those intent on chaos need to leave Ferguson!!! They are gonna cause more death and destruction. How the heck does that resolve anything?

Capt Saul @ 8/19/2014 6:59 AM

Yep, get shot at and "act with restraint", I doubt there was calm, and you will loose this city to thugs. As the script reads in Starwars....."blast em, blast em".

John @ 8/19/2014 7:21 AM

It is unfortunate, but I predict that Ferguson is only the beginning. By showing "restraint", authorities are merely encouraging the protesters, who will use any reason or perceived justification to rob, loot and pillage. If the leaders are identified and taken out (with extreme prejudice) of the situation, "peace & calm" would be immediately restored. These thugs and hoodlums have no fear in the face of authority's "restraint".

sarge35 @ 8/19/2014 7:22 AM

This is how the lawless society acts, and it's never about the real issues that start in their own community anyway. Fence them in and let the jerks kill each other. Hopefully Al Sharpton, the biggest trouble maker in the country will be there too.

fdc @ 8/19/2014 7:27 AM

Wtf... if they shoot at you then by God shoot back.. That will stop them from shooting at you. . Restraint hell.. get a grip you spineless retard Capt Restraint

police officer @ 8/19/2014 7:40 AM

To calm the people,The Justice department needs to release the chief of police. His job is to keep the peace. All he has done is play both sides.First releasing the video of brown committing a strong arm robbery.Making the people mad.And he has made statements a day later. This just keeps the people in a up roar. When the police chief is removed. Then the town Will calm down. Then the FBI can give the answers to what action will be taken against the police officer that shot Brown.

MLT @ 8/19/2014 7:52 AM

(Police Officer) Why should the Chief step down or even be "released". What if it turns out the officer did everything correct? Why should the Chief, his good name, reputation, pension, career etc...be thrown away because some choose to act like animals? Maybe you should quit too...... Maybe, the law abiding citizens of Ferguson like him and think he is a good Chief. Why empower the animals more?

Wally @ 8/19/2014 7:57 AM

Why do the news reports not state that a Police officer defending him self shot an offender who kept up his attack? What did the OFFENDER say "I'm going to kill you!

Tom Ret @ 8/19/2014 8:32 AM

Capt Johnson has a hard job in trying to gain control over an ever increasing chaotic and publicized situation. Facts on the ground seem to indicate that the super restraint that he points out and for everyone with a brain to see on the part of the police is not working to quell the violence maybe because it is taken by the bad guys as weakness and opportunity to raise hell. There will always be those who criticize the police for using too much force as they could care less if officers are hurt or killed but their butts are not on the line to maintain order. When Johnson described his officers coming under "heavy gunfire" it sure doesn't indicate a good time to take away the military looking gear that is so non PC these days as it is likely protecting their lives. It is time to spot and isolate the out of town people who are there to create mayhem and put the hurt on them. Feds getting involved, like the media, will not dampen but fuel this situation.

Tom Ret @ 8/19/2014 9:15 AM

To police officer-If you are in fact a police officer, which I doubt, you are an idiot!

Capt. Crunch @ 8/19/2014 9:34 AM

The governor must think these black rioting morons are going to get tired and just go home. The governor needs to be different then brother Obama, and do his job by declaring Marshal Law. This riot has gone on to long.

Richard Hightower @ 8/19/2014 11:38 AM

The ONLY way to handle wide spread and, what at this point is, chronic rioting and lawlessness is come down HARD. Those that are "peacefully protesting" are mearly providing cover and protection to those that are intent on lawlessness and violence. The "peaceful" are not actually peaceful... they are at least unwilling participants in the violence.

"Johnson said "officers came under heavy gunfire" during the night, but said officers did not fire a single shot. They "acted with restraint and calm," he said."

Since when do we allow people to shoot at Police Officers and the can't retaliate? That policy is insane and will get an officer killed.

Justin @ 8/19/2014 2:54 PM

"Since when do we allow people to shoot at Police Officers and the can't retaliate? That policy is insane and will get an officer killed."

VICE had some live streaming coverage that caught some of the heavy gunfire and it appeared that the coward shooters were either in a large crowd or concealed in a building. We can't shoot back if we don't have an identifiable target. The last thing we need is for an officer to shoot indiscriminately into a crowd.

Dave @ 8/19/2014 6:31 PM

It won't be the first time it's outsiders...and let's not forget the Florence and Normandy input to chaos...same thing in Albuquerque protest a few months back:-)

ted @ 8/19/2014 11:22 PM

I really don't know why the protest is going on? According to over a dozen witnesses the suspect was going after the Officers gun, so he had to shoot him to save his own life. The community should be thanking the Police for getting another criminal off the streets.

Hal @ 8/20/2014 6:34 AM

Mudturtles acting like Mudturtles!!

Fed_up @ 8/20/2014 9:03 PM

If anyone EVER sees Romney supporters acting this way, let us know.

Dwayne Juedes @ 8/21/2014 6:33 AM
