A barricaded suspect fatally shot a Killeen (Texas) Police SWAT officer and wounded a second officer early Sunday after pretending to surrender at an apartment complex.

The man, who has not been identified, fatally shot Officer Robert "Bobby" Hornsby, 32, with an AK-47 rifle, according to the agency.

Killeen PD officers responded to a 911 call at 11:40 p.m. that a resident had threatened several people in the pool area of the Grandon Manor Apartments with a gun.

Initial responding units located a man inside an apartment holding a rifle in a threatening manner. The agency called out its Tactical Response Unit, which arrived and attempted to contact the man, who raised his hands.

After the man fired one shot, officers attempted to take him into custody. He backed into the apartment, armed himself with the AK-47, and began shooting at officers. Officer Hornsby was fatally shot and Officer Juan Obregon Jr., 33, was wounded in the leg. Other officers returned fire, killing the man.

Officer Hornsby was a four-year agency veteran. He leaves behind a wife, 4-year-old daughter, and 1-year-old son.

Now,,,If the coppers would have shot him as his hands were in the air, they would be called "Killer Cops" and the entire country would riot and want more blood.
Too damn bad they did not drop the hammer on the guy as he backed into the house before he got off a shot. If I were there, I'd enjoy being the one to kill this guy.

Retired NYPD Det. 36 yrs., hostage negotiation trainer, etc.

Incapable to second guess anyone's tactics in a tragedy such as this anymore than ability to foretell actions of an evidently emotionally unstable gunman.

The officer was part of a team in the treacherous dynamics of disarming a potentially lethal individual who visited his violence on them. A team effort gone awry, due moreso to unforeseen actions of a killer.
How does one predict? Always, always expect the unexpected- and pray that you're correct.

"Suicide by cop"? Following murder & attempted murder of cops. . .

My heart aches for the loss of this fine officer, his family, friends, co-workers. His loss is a void which will not be filled.

Society is poorer for "their loss".

Where was the counter-sniper covering the arrest team? Sad to lose a good officer.

Renee @ 7/16/2013 3:22 AM

Many special blessings to wife and child now and for years to come. This, like all such killings, was an enromous tragedy. I can only imagine the pain Officer Hornsby's loved ones and close brother LEOs are feeling. No real answers other than reaching out to the Lord.

Tom Nerney above: Excellent comments and perspective.

Our system is focusing on the rights of the criminals instead of protecting the lives of those who are honest and hard working! Our President, governor, mayor, or even the supreme justices could not stand firm on what is right. So sad for the Fam n kid! Another baby lost another father and another mother lost her beloved husband/ sweetheart! How many more of these stories we have to read or hear about before our system wakes up! SAD! Sad! Terrible! Day!

ArmedNigger @ 3/19/2014 4:40 PM

Thank GOD for dead police..
