Boston Bombs Made With Pressure Cookers

April 16, 2013  |

A six-quart pressure cooker can function as a housing for an IED.
A six-quart pressure cooker can function as a housing for an IED.

The two explosive devices that killed three people and wounded more than 170 at the Boston Marathon were likely pressure-cooker bombs similar to those used in Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan.

The explosives were likely placed in a six-liter pressure cooker, placed in black duffel bags, and left on the ground. The pressure cookers were likely packed with shards of metal, nails, and ball bearings, a law enforcement source told the Associated Press.

In a Tuesday press conference, FBI Special Agent Richard Deslauriers said investigators "will go to the ends of the Earth" to find those responsible.

Boston Police have asked for any photos and video taken by citizens at the scene as the FBI-led investigation continues.

Editor's note: Scientific American published an excellent explainer about how terrorists remotely detonate IEDs.

Im writing the pres and my congressman DEMANDING they ban ALL bomb making material, i.e. Cellphones nails ball bearings gunpowder. Anybody on board with me ?

Rick @ 4/16/2013 2:42 PM

Napalitano said that there was no connection to organizations outside the country, mirroring statements made by CNN and Feinstein that it could be the work of right wing extremists, and yet this evidence and the suspicious statements made by the Saudi fleeing the scene seems to indicate that it was an overseas terror organization and not 'home grown' idiots like the liberals want to make it out to be.

James @ 4/16/2013 2:48 PM

Lets ban all cookware!??

We must remember Politicians care nothing for the truth, they just promote their agendas.

Jon @ 4/16/2013 2:54 PM

I think we should just ban all liberals.

Tom Ret @ 4/16/2013 3:13 PM

It does seem to boil down to limiting pressure cooker purchases to one a month or like Jon says-ban all liberals. Ok, ban all liberals, at least from
positions of power where their decisions affect us all.

PC9744 @ 4/16/2013 3:18 PM

Universal background checks on pressure cooker purchases and quart capacity limits should be imposed too. Pressure cooker shows have too many loopholes where background checks are bypassed, and there is no need for anyone to have high-capacity pressure cookers, like the ones used in the battlefield. Who's with me??? ;^)

Billy @ 4/16/2013 3:45 PM

OMG time to ban "Assault Pressure Cookers" or at least limit them to less dangerous 4-quart models!

On a serious note - thoughts and prayers to the victims of this tragic incident. If "they" get awy with this, count on more to follow...

SA John @ 4/15/2013 4:26 PM

Let's ban idiots from this forum. Take your politics elsewhere. A serious criminal investigation with some very wounded victims is what the article is about. WTF?

Ima Leprechaun @ 4/16/2013 5:29 PM

Any comments made at this time are irresponsible and unwarranted by any media outlet even this one.

Rick @ 4/16/2013 5:41 PM

I think [hope?] that Chuck was being sarcastic on the ban thing. I'm not worried, though. Our Leader said that he will seek and find those responsible. SInce his admin did such a great job with Bengazi, it's in the bag.

gunner @ 4/16/2013 7:02 PM

I agree with SA John, we should ban idiots from this site. My reasons are the following:
The two great carnages perpetrated on this Great Country was done where? Good guess, New York and now Boston. Why? Well in my humble opinion look at the leadership, Liberals.
When NY was hit George Bush had been in office 100 plus days coming after a Liberal Bill Clinton.
President Obama has been in Office 4 years and 4 months and we are hit again. Never hit again after Bush, look at his and now this Administrations appointments. The hits with Benghazi and and the border states with Fast and Furious and lack of information forthcoming are telling on this Administration, maybe payback to Hillary for zip the lip with Benghazi? At what point will this Administration especially with the Homeland Director quit worrying about immigration reform, gay politics, gun take away from honest Americans, taking God out of the National equation and put God back into America, no profiling?? Welfare for illegals, Obamacare (that will ruin the Country) golfing with Tiger and Vacations for the family in Colorado and Hawaii when the Nation is at risk and broke? No visitation of the White House for kids for financial reasons, what does is cost the taxpayer to vacation on AFOne? Give me a break! Please I'm not trying to be political but just worry about all our families and friends like those in Boston and the Southwest and where precious taxpayer monies are being spent. Are we going to spend taxpayer monies to protect Americans or Presidential Vacations. Votes, Vacations vs. Security? Please give me an answer, I would like to convey to those in the places affected by these catastrophes your recommendations for their safety.
Look forward for your intelligent, thought provoking answer. Please don't tell me we would have to lay off L.E. and First Responders to fund this.
Semper Fi, RIP that lost their lives, God Bless all the Heros and stay safe L.E. and Responders you are terrific!

Wayne @ 4/16/2013 7:21 PM

Where are the Permits to speak (thereby inciting violence) as well as Permits to Purchase Pressure Cookers? Certainly we should demand a three day "Cooling Off Period" between the purchase of a pressure cooker and the purchaser receiving the pressure cooker! Just think how much violence we could stop IF you had to obtain a Permit to Speak and then had the Three Day Cooling Off Period between Permit Issuance and your being allowed to Speak! No more Domestic Violence! No More Klan Assaults, etc! Course we'd have to try prevent the Congress and White House from exempting themselves from these "Common Sense" Laws! After all, IF SAVES JUST ONE LIFE, it's worth a "little' inconvenience! Like obliterating the Bill Of Rights and our Unalienable God Given Rights!

Chuck @ 4/15/2013 8:08 PM

Rick i was being very sarastic. The libs think that guns kill people well so do componets of bomb making material. Its people that kill people

Gary @ 4/17/2013 7:13 AM

Hey, what happened to the guy's comment, talking about the U.S. being responsible for all of Iraq's bombings/problems? I was getting ready to unload, and the comment just disappeared...

Mark @ 4/17/2013 8:07 AM

Given the right motivation, a person or group can create a mechanism that will cause this kind of carnage. Those devices can be made with common obtainable items. This isn't about gun control, or foreign terrorists. It IS about terrorism. Homegrown or otherwise, our first line of defense is involvement of community to report suspicious items. I'm not advocating vigilante-ism at all.
Anywhere there are crowds, this type of attack is possible AND probable. All citizens need to become the eyes of the police and remain vigilant (not paranoid) to our surroundings.

Madma47 @ 4/17/2013 2:28 PM

It's too bad that a LE mag can't even post a simple info piece without someone always turning to political slams. Years on the job tell me that it is wise to just ignore the doves of stupid humans and get on with the facts. Opinions not needed thank you. Our chaste view of the world is out of date: the undercurrents of our society will eventually prove to the masses that the hate stewing within our country will ultimately show us what most of the world knows: people hate, they plot, they want to send messages with violence. Yes it can, will, and does happen in our own backyards Americans. This isn't about politics, it's about a human drive to hurt others...no more no less. Innocent people died, innocent people were injured, and lots of innocent people showed up to help out...there isn't anything political about it. Peace to the fallen & thanks to the people who didn't just think of themselves. And of course, huah to my brothers in blue.

Trey @ 4/18/2013 6:55 AM

@Chuck
YEAH! and while we're at it we need to ban knives, guns, drugs, and even cars! it dosen't matter what you want to ban, it's not gonna make it go away. it just takes it from the honest, good people in the world while the "bad" guys will still obtain what they want no matter the law. people shoot each other, stab each other, and people are killed by cars everyday. BAN all of it, why dont the politicians try that next!
