Video: Boston Marathon Bombing Kills 3, Injures 134

VIDEO: Boston Marathon Bombing

Two explosions rocked the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Patriots' Day Monday afternoon, killing three and injuring 134 others including a police officer.

Police and fire personnel responded to the chaotic scene, following the explosions that were captured by several media outlets. The explosions occurred at about 2:50 p.m.

A 20-year-old Saudi Arabian suspect with severe burns is being guarded at a local hospital, according to the New York Post.

President Obama said the federal government is mobilizing resources and the nation would "remember Boston in their prayers tonight," while speaking at a White House press conference.

"Make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this," Obama said. "Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice."

Following the explosions, the Boston Police Department shut down cellular phone operation in the area to prevent detonation of other devices. At least five unexploded devices were located by police following the explosions, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The explosions occurred moments apart in front of Marathon Sports on Boylston Street, reports CBS Boston. The bombs had been placed in trash cans near the finish line.

After he watched video of the bombings, law enforcement explosives expert David Spraggs told POLICE that high explosives were used with detonating velocities of between 15,000 and 26,000 feet per second. Spraggs, a certified bomb tech with the Boulder (Colo.) PD, guessed that each explosive device used 5-10 pounds of explosives.

"It was highly energetic," Spraggs said. "I don't think there's anybody out there who could say what it is right now. If I had to make a guess, I would say homemade explosives."

A Boston Police officer was among the wounded. He was wheeled from the scene at Copley Square with a leg injury. A Boston Globe sports producer captured street-level video of the explosions and the chaotic aftermath. NBC affiliate WHDH also has video.

A third explosion in the mechanical room of JFK Library in south Boston earlier in the day may be connected to the Copley Square bombings, Police Commissioner Ed Davis told the Boston Globe.

Very sad day.

Rick @ 4/15/2013 4:15 PM

My questions is (after hoping for the recovery of all of the injured and my wishes for peace for the grieving families): how will the anti-civil rights turn this to further attempt to shame us into voting for gun rights restrictions?

Rob @ 4/14/2013 4:32 PM

Prayers to the victims. My hat off to Boston Police and emergency responders. When the dust settles, a gallows in a very public place?

Bob @ 4/15/2013 5:05 PM

If nothing else, this is a clear cry for more background checks on bomb makers.

gunner @ 4/15/2013 6:24 PM

My thoughts and prayer go to all who suffered physical or emotional injuries from this horrific attack, a terrorist attack on another city in America, but I do feel safer tonight after hearing a Government Official say he was going to get to the bottom of this. I'm sure the Government will bring in the same investigative team to bring closure to this case like they did with Benghazi and Fast an Furious. Somehow they will say this is just another reason why good honest people should not have firearms. I sure agree with you Rick.
Semper Fi and Stay Safe.
God Bless our Troops and Law Enforcement especially tonight in Boston.

My thoughts and prayers also go out to the victims of this senseless killings. I always felt this day would come and I personally point fingers at the ACLU, our weak government when it comes to immirgration, lack of racial profiling along with the stupidity of the american citizens to stand up to all the political correctness that is taking this country and the American way down. Rant off!

gunner @ 4/15/2013 7:52 PM

A special BRAVO to the Common Citizen, Medical Teams, EMS, Doctors and Nurses, common people doing uncommon deeds.
Will they now from our Justice Department come in and give the suspect(s) if ever cuffed and stuffed their Miranda Rights then proper housing with specific food (if applicable) and hire the best Attorneys to make sure all the rights are correct? If the smallest mistake is made the present Supreme Court will probably set the individual or group merrily on their way. My question and I hope will be answered with total honesty is: Would have "Waterboarding, Sleep Deprivation or any of our other measures" stopped this from happening. Don't tell me, tell the families that suffered from this catastrophe. It is time to start protecting America instead of like said previous "Political Correctness" or this type of senseless killings will continue to happen and probably only increase.
God Bless America and all that risk life and limb to protect her.
Semper Fi and Stay Safe!

Gunner: You are calling it correctly and identifying our weak spots. Sun Tzu, 1000 years ago wrote The Art of War. It is required reading in all our military academies. The current administration is ignoring Sun Tzu's Wisdom and playing into the hands of terrorism. We can expect this for four more years. Listen out for the minimizing about to come on this matter. As you recall, it was a video that caused the Bengazi killings. President O said so on the View on National TV.

COWARDS- do this I was born North of here in Somerville class of (55) then moved to Cape Ann as a young heart is heavy once again...This area is heavily wired so I am sure there will be more later...To all who witnessed and worked this tragedy God Bless you stay strong we are behind you 100% my prayers and thoughts are with you...:-( P.S. there are some more dots to connect...but that's a different area...

Tom Ret @ 4/16/2013 12:28 PM

To characterize this event as a tragedy doesn't seem to capture what really happened. It was terrorism, pure and simple. There was no regard for victims, whether they be christian, muslim, jew, men, women or children. It was pure evil, no matter how you slice it or rationalize it.
The punishment and process for those involved should be commensurate with crimes against humanity. In other words, suspects should not be processed in the regular court system but through military tribunal. Doing otherwise does not prove how great we are to the world as the ACLU would advocate but how absurd our system has become in trying to protect someone's rights whose aim is to kill as many of us as they can. The survival of our society and justice for the victims should take precedence in this case.

Tschako @ 4/16/2013 9:08 PM

Kudos also to the two military men who jumped in from nowhere and started ripping away the barriers so emergency people could get to the injured. Boos to ALL of the runners who glanced at the explosion and just kept jogging along to glory.

TJ Suter @ 4/9/2014 6:12 AM

My name is TJ Suter. I live in Hillsboro, NH and I would like to send my condolences to those who lost someone in the tragedy. I think about that day every day and not a day goes by that I don't think of ways for me to help those affected both physically and emotionally. I am a patient partner for the Miles for Miracles Children's Hospital Boston Marathon Team. For everyone who reads this, I am thinking of you. Even if I don't know you, just know that I care. If you are reading this, tell people what I wrote so that they may feel comfort as well as yourself. Boston is a city that will always be united as one. We will run again. Why? Because we are BOSTON STRONG.
