Fugitive ex-LAPD cop Chris Dorner fatally shot a San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy during a Tuesday shootout, before barricading himself in a remote cabin.

California Fish and Wildlife officers initially spotted Chris Dorner at 12:22 p.m. driving a white Dodge pickup truck in the remote Seven Oaks area of the San Bernardino Mountains. Dorner opened fire on the officers, fled on foot, and entered a cabin, reports CBS Los Angeles.

A second gun battle occurred a short time later where hundred rounds were fired, reports the Los Angeles Times. Two San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies were hit in an exchange of gunfire in an area near Route 38. One deputy died at Loma Linda University Medical Center. The other deputy is expected to recover.

"The best thing for him now is to surrender," LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told the media shortly after 3 p.m. "There's a tremendous sense of apprehension among our officers. Until this man is in custody, none of the officers in our department are going to rest."

LAPD detectives continued to pursue 1,045 clues in the case, Smith said.

Earlier, Dorner reportedly broke into a cabin in the 1200 block of Club View Drive and tied up a couple. One was able to get away and call authorities, reports the Associated Press. He reportedly stole the couple's white pickup truck.

Authorities have been searching for Dorner since Thursday. He is suspected of killing three people, including a Riverside Police officer, and wounding two other officers.

Somebody needs to put one between this guy's eyes, soon

Terry Zech @ 2/12/2013 1:54 PM

What happened to Dorner nobody hit him

Trigger @ 2/12/2013 1:55 PM

Sad state of affairs, there will definitely be more blood shed from him before this is done.

john @ IA retired @ 2/12/2013 2:03 PM

It's very sad that we must hunt one of our own. But it must be done, and done quickly. Be safe while bringing this criminal to justice.

Capt @ 2/12/2013 2:06 PM

Guess this puts to rest the thought he was in Mexico.
I agree that this guy will take out who he can when he can and seems to have no problem waiting for the opportunity.
Whenever he surfaces though he opens himself up to detectionand elimination.

Bruce @ 2/12/2013 2:08 PM

Get those drones in the air.

NYC Centurian @ 2/12/2013 2:26 PM

Dorner is well a well trained former law enforcement and military veteran. Dorner is not a an idiot thug, typical bad guy or gang-banger. Gangsters/thugs prey on the weak, innocent or each other, and law enforcement/military professionals prey on gangsters/thugs. Dorner is a highly trained/skilled enemy combatant and should not be approached with conventional tactics, which he is familiar with. Do not engage alone or even in pairs. Seek cover, call for back-up forthwith, keep insight, follow if possible, get SWAT.

Former Chief @ 2/12/2013 2:35 PM

He'll probably kill more and then turn the gun on himself..cowards are like that, you know.

Greg @ 2/12/2013 2:37 PM

Well maybe they can try what the DINGBAT Diane Feinstein said.Everybody, including police, turn your guns in.Then, once Dorner sees no one else is armed,he will turn himself in,ugh.Stay safe guys

Patriot @ 2/12/2013 2:50 PM

John IA Retired, please note that dorner (intentional lower case) stopped "being one of our own" when he killed my Brother LEO

shawn @ 2/12/2013 2:55 PM

It's simple...you get the shot...take it...green light.

Capt. Crunch @ 2/12/2013 3:02 PM

Patriot, you got that right, lets stop the SOB before he kills more.

Rob @ 2/12/2013 3:19 PM

I hope he discovers that it is a lot harder to fight from a defensive position that is only hastily prepared that from ambush shooting unsuspecting officers and civilians. Stay safe brothers and my prayers are with you. And let's hope that the bullet he saves for himself is a dud...

Kraig M. Fulton @ 2/12/2013 3:20 PM

Unfortunately someone else will die. I don't believe he will just walk out. Hope and pray for the life of the remaining hostage. "Sniper up!" We don't have to like it, it just needs to be done. We haven't seen the last of our countries trained professionals going awry. Stay safe and watch your back. Laus Deo

Some times you have to be the wolf to protect the sheep!!!

Russ @ 2/12/2013 3:48 PM

Trained killer or not, he is one now. What he needs is to do is have a 50 cal to the middle of his brain.

Mickey @ 2/12/2013 3:55 PM

Many news agencies reporting that a SBSO has died as a result of this incident in the San Bernadino Mountains.

Tom Ret @ 2/12/2013 4:04 PM

Unfortunately, he has killed another officer. There is a time to negotiate and that time is over.

westcoastleo @ 2/12/2013 4:05 PM

True, 1 officer dead at hospital...
Yet people out there think he's a hero. I'd enjoy killing him if I had the chance...

mando @ 2/12/2013 4:06 PM

gary jansen @ 2/12/2013 4:56 PM

even do dorner got fired it does not solve the problemwhat ever
happen to him when he was on the lapd even do he was fired he wood
bin better to put it in gods hands

John Russell @ 2/12/2013 5:43 PM

What happens if no BODY is found? He may have decided to use this as well as a rouse to get away?

csm @ 2/12/2013 6:04 PM

Our prayers go out to the victims of this former member, now perp, hopefully this ends without more innocent bloodshed. With respect to the comments about registering and turning weapons in, I don't think that's in the cards. Reasonable and responsible gun ownership is definitely in order though, with comprehensive background checks to keep them out of the hands of the unstable, and military type weapons with large capacity mags for the military and police only.

Doc @ 2/12/2013 8:35 PM

Gun control and "gun free zones" have already Failed, so why would a sane person think that it was "reasonable or responsible" ? Hitler & Castro both thought gun control was great, just like Obama and dorner.
dorner is DEAD, his body was found, and I hope he continues to burn.
Magazine limits didn't reduce crime didn't reduce violent crime from 1994 to 2004, so that has already failed.
These bans are just a way to disarm the public.

Red @ 2/13/2013 11:00 AM

To LA Police Department: Bet you sure miss Gates!
