San Diego Officer Killed in Apartment Gunbattle

October 28, 2010  |

A San Diego police officer was mortally wounded in a barrage of gunfire Wednesday night when he and other officers kicked down a door inside a southeastern San Diego apartment after an hours-long SWAT standoff.

Police identified the slain officer as Christopher Wilson, a 17-year patrol officer and field trainer in the Southeast Division. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders described Wilson to the San Diego Union-Tribune as "popular, funny, extremely bright and a consummate professional." Other officers often referred to him as "good cover," because he always had their backs.

With the shooter barricaded behind a bedroom door, some officers carried Wilson down a flight of stairs while others were briefly trapped in the apartment. One officer climbed out a window and down a fire truck ladder to escape.

The shooting, in which a police dog also was wounded, led to evacuation of residents from the 56-unit complex on South Meadowbrook Drive at Paradise Valley Road shortly after 11 p.m.

The names of two men and a woman taken into custody from the apartment have not been released. Also a man and woman were found dead in the apartment.
