An Iredell County, N.C., sheriff’s deputy learned the hard way this week that summer storms can offer great hazards for law enforcement officers. The deputy was struck by lightning while responding to a call near Lake Norman.

Official say the deputy, who was not named, is expected to be fine. However, he was experiencing some shortness of breath and felt some pain where the lightning struck him in his hip.

The Piedmont area of the state, including Iredell County, experienced severe electrical storms and high winds several nights this week. The storms uprooted trees, wrecked a home in Matthews, N.C., and caused the wall of an abandoned business to collapse in a popular Charlotte entertainment area.
