NYPD Uses London Bombings as Learning Experience

July 28, 2005  |

To best prepare for possible terrorist bombings in the United States, the New York Police Department is studying those that occurred in London this month.

The department sent its explosives expert to the United Kingdom to study the specifics of the bombings. As part of a special police unit that monitors businesses whose products could be used to make bombs, the investigator regularly examines “bomb methodologies” used in other parts of the world.

NYPD’s special unit has recently assessed the security of hundreds of businesses that sell chemicals terrorists might use to create bombs. The agency has advised owners to improve security with more video surveillance, better lighting, and more guards to prevent theft.
