A Miami Beach police officer who killed one woman and severely injured another when he drove over them while they sunbathed will not be charged because he was not driving recklessly, the state attorney’s office says.

A Miami Beach police officer who killed one woman and severely injured another when he drove over them while they sunbathed will not be charged because he was not driving recklessly, the state attorney’s office says.

Officer George Varon “was traveling at a very slow speed,” when he was driving over the sand looking for a robbery suspect, says Assistant State Attorney David Gilbert.

Stephanie Tunc, 27, died, and her sister Sandrine was severely injured when Varon ran over them with a two-ton SUV on February 22.

The two French women lived in Britain and were in Florida on vacation.

The Tuncs’ family lawyer says his clients are “disappointed” with the decision but that it will not affect a lawsuit the family has filed against the city of Miami Beach, seeking millions of dollars in compensation.
