Los Angeles Mayor Rejects Advisor's Plan To Halt Police Hiring

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana made the recommendation in a city report to help close a $54-million budget gap. Santana suggested halting hiring until July 1, when a city measure goes into effect trimming the retirement benefits of newly hired officers.

A spokesman for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said a city administrator's plan to halt recruitment by the Los Angeles Police Department "makes no financial or operational sense whatsoever," the Los Angeles Times reports.

City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana made the recommendation in a city report to help close a $54-million budget gap. Santana suggested halting hiring until July 1, when a city measure goes into effect trimming the retirement benefits of newly hired officers.

The LAPD adds about 25 officers a month with new cadet classes. Currently, the agency hires enough officers to replace the number of officers who retire or resign from the force.
