Law Enforcement Deaths Rose Sharply First Half of 2007

The number of law enforcement officers killed in the United States soared by 44 percent during the first six months of 2007, and for the first time in three decades, more than 100 officer deaths were recorded by the halfway point of the year, according to preliminary statistics from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS).

New Report Examines Inmate Demographics

A new analysis provides a regional examination of the racial and ethnic dynamics of incarceration in the U.S. The report finds that African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six (5.6) times the rate of whites and Hispanics nearly double (1.8) the rate.

Senate Hears Testimony in Convicted Border Agents' Appeal

Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean are serving 11- and 12-year sentences in federal prison for shooting a suspected Mexican drug runner in the buttocks while on duty as border patrol agents in Texas. A jury convicted them in March 2006 of violating gun laws and attempting a cover-up after they failed to write a report of the incident. But a senate subpanel is hearing witness testimony in the officers' appeal.
