About 3 p.m., Trooper First Class Wing Tong of the Waterloo Barrack stopped a Ford SUV near Route 175 for appearing to have improper license plates, according to police. As Tong approached the stopped Ford on its passenger side, a Mercury drove on to the shoulder and struck Tong's car and the Ford, which knocked tong over the guardrail.

At the end of a long and emotional sentencing hearing on Wednesday afternoon, 4th District Court Judge Darold McDade sentenced the 18-year-old Grunwald to serve 25 years-to-life in prison with the chance of parole. He added another 5-to-life for other charges, bringing the total to 30-to life.
