In a lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Detroit, Michelle Reynolds says that police used excessive force and violated her 20-year-old son's civil rights in a confrontation outside the family's home in May.

Police had responded to reports that Cody Reynolds had stabbed his mother and had ordered the man to get on the ground, but he instead rushed at the officer, who then fired multiple shots, fatally wounding him.

In August, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office cleared Officer Ryan Addis of any wrongdoing, ruling the shooting by the four-year veteran police officer was justified, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The lawsuit seeks damages of $10 million.
