According to KOIN News, police leaders from the Portland (OR) Police Department held the third annual community "summit" meeting aimed at building trust with the community.
"Building Bridges of Understanding in Our Communities came together in September 2016, at a time of heightened tensions in our country and polarizing political rhetoric," said the City of Portland on its website. "We explored bias as both a bridge and a barrier to maintaining a strong, safe, and caring community. Our efforts strengthened the trust between each other and the communities we serve."
"Trust is the foundation of what allows law enforcement to be effective," Deputy Chief Bob Day told the news station. "Trust is hard to gain and easy to lose."
Law enforcement officers from Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties joined leaders from several community organizations at the event.
