Two Brookhaven, MS, police officers were shot and killed Saturday morning. A suspect was wounded and is in custody.

The Brookhaven Police Department received a call at about 5 a.m. from someone who reported that shots were fired, said Warren Strain, spokesman with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

"Officers responded, there was an exchange of gunfire and two officers were mortally wounded," Strain told WAPT. "The suspect was wounded and he's been transported to a Jackson hospital where he's undergoing treatment and is in custody."

Patrolman James White, 35, and Cpl. Zach Moak, 31, were both taken to Kings Daughter's Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, Strain said. White was hired by the Brookhaven Police Department in June 2015, but had worked there previously and then returned, authorities said. Moak was also hired in 2015 and had recently been promoted to corporal, authorities said.

Marquis Flowers, 25, of Brookhaven, was identified as the suspect, Strain said. Flowers' condition was not released.

Two more servants of the public murdered, you will not hear about this on national news, and the person who shot them will live its life in jail while victims family mourns forever

Rest in peace brothers, now why is the suspect still alive. We need to ensure that this POS is convicted and given the death penalty for killing two officers. It sounds like Brookhaven needs to be given some extra support. Prayers for the officer's families.

Rest in peace Officer White and Officer Moak, thank you for your service to the City Of Brookhaven and the State of Mississippi you’re sacrifice will not be forgotten. Prayers to you, your family and friends. It’s a sad day for all of us in the LEO community. Be careful out there brothers and sisters.

Very sad news from Mississippi. We all pray for these officers and their families.

What is needed is a FEDERAL statute mandating the death penalty for those who would shoot and kill a law enforcement officer.

Rest in peace Officers and prayers to your families at this most difficult time. May the perp get what he has coming to him which is capital punishment but I will have to see it before I believe it.

Sad, God rest their souls. I notice when a B/M subject (read any minority) is shot/killed by police the race is always reported. Yet when an officer is shot and killed by a minority suspect the race is rarely reported. Why is that? I (and many others) would like to see the stats on how many cop killers/assault suspect are minority. I would bet my badge that the MAJORITY of cops shot/killed/wounded are attacked by MINORITIES. We in Law Enforcement certainly realize that this does not fit the "evil cop/ poor minority" narrative. Another subtle way of blaming cops and allowing minorities to skate. Then we could truly tell the % of a given race and the % of crimes that particular race commits as compared to their % of the population. This would scare most people to death.
