Chiefs Blast Senator's Remark About 'Racist' Criminal Justice System

Last week while speaking before an audience at Dillard University — whose student body is predominantly African American — Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren said that the American criminal justice system is "racist ... front to back."

Warren — a potential Democratic presidential candidate — cited "disproportionate arrests of African-Americans for petty drug possession; an overloaded public defender system; and state laws that keep convicted felons from voting even after their sentences are complete," according to the Telegram and Gazette.

Warren's comments quickly drew the ire of law enforcement leaders across her state.

The president of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, Dudley Police Chief Steven Wojnar, said in a letter to the senator, "Labeling the entire criminal justice profession as 'racist' spreads false and damaging information about our members."

"When our elected officials make generalized and inflammatory statements about our entire profession, without any information to back their position, it creates further hostility toward our officers and can damage the positive relationships with our residents that we have worked long and hard to establish," Wojnar wrote.

Yarmouth Chief Frank Frederickson wrote on Facebook that Senator Warren's statement was "an insult to the hard working men and women of the Yarmouth Police Department as well as other Local, State and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies who are part of the criminal justice system. Additionally there are many District Attorneys, Judges, Probation Officers, Parole Officers and other parts of the system that she slapped in the face."

If this mis-informed woman is a candidate for president of the United States God help us all! We need every able voter to get out and vote so that this great country will remain the United States of America! If she gets in she will surely finish what Obama started out to do.

Boston @ 8/13/2018 4:42 PM

She is the most toxic politician I have ever met. She should be backing the US Military and every law Enforcement Agency in the USA. The people that protect all.

Trigger @ 8/13/2018 4:49 PM

It’s easy for idiots like Warren to sit back in their crystal castles and make statements like that. They are totally clueless on what the true facts are. Yet other idiots still keep them in office.

Tom ret @ 8/13/2018 5:07 PM

This woman is an idiot leftist but all too typical of today's democratic party. Warren and the ACLU would work good together, not so much for law enforcement or the country.

HRPufnstuf @ 8/13/2018 5:52 PM

Maybe I'm a racist, as I dislike fake "Indians."

Rick @ 8/13/2018 6:07 PM

The prohibition of convicted felons voting is a penalty for said felony conviction, and was enacted by the state legislatures. Law enforcement has no say in that anyway. However, like a typical politician, she will pass the buck and blame someone else. Of course, in Kaliforniastan there are already attempts to change that particular law. Hell, they already allow dead people to vote...

LEO (RET) @ 8/13/2018 6:29 PM

She is a total disgrace. And, she is sooo out of touch with America.

Tom Conlin @ 8/13/2018 10:05 PM

Let me see if I got this right. Racism is believing your race is superior to every other race. Every race other than yours is bad. So using that logic, all cops, taken as the “cop race,” are bad. Who’s the racist here?

westcoastleo @ 8/13/2018 10:10 PM

This woman is a cancer to our society and she is a danger to all LEO's in the USA. I really hope the good tax payin Americans will see that she has no place in our society. She is racist to say "All" of the criminal justice system is racist.

Bravo for the police executives standing up for the vast majority of peace officers throughout the country. I feel the political comments are classic when placed in the perspective that politicians are "on their honor" when they enter the White House Situation Room, but peace officers can only be trusted when they are forced to wear cameras in some jurisdictions. The "new world" is a head shaker!

Jim Lauria @ 8/14/2018 7:07 AM

Oh by the way..."if" it so racist and corrupt what is she...Senator Warren doing about it. It's typical of someone who has never been in the arena, making comments about those of us who are in it every day trying to keep everyone safe. She seems so blinded by wanting to be the President that she'll say anything to create a voting base.

Poor diluted politician that can only highlight perceived problems with no viable solutions.

Gary Vernon @ 8/14/2018 7:22 AM

All officers, their families, neighbors, and friends should be offended by these false and hostile remarks.

otj27 yrs @ 8/14/2018 11:50 AM

ME “not ever going to become president, right? Right?!”

Myself “No. No she’s not. We’ll stop it,”

I "I probably shouldn't have said that."

At least I am not conspiring with another person or using my office to do so. Ha ha couldn't resist.

Scott Ashmore @ 8/14/2018 1:17 PM

The people of Massachusetts keep putting her in office, so what do you think is going to happen?

kojack58 @ 8/15/2018 7:13 AM

Senator Warren, Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi and even Schumer need to go. They have got their millions retire and let the working people alone. Let the LEO's do their job like I did. Re-instate the death penalty and watch the crime rate drop and enforce it.

Joe @ 8/19/2018 7:30 PM

I'm trying to remember, is she black, American-Indian, white, Asian? Oh yeah...she's MENTAL. A career politician who has police protection saying the system is racist. Hmmm, as a politician, isn't SHE part of the system? Therefore she has called herself a racist. Those that "protect" her should be offended as well. GOOD JOB to all those that responded to her toxic comments. It's time to really clean out the swamp.

ssc1911 @ 8/21/2018 7:55 AM

She is an embarassment as are others who hold one of highest elected positions in our country's politcial system that a person is able to hold. Her remarks are racist towards law enforcment which is wrong. She has no clue as she is a libral progressive politician, they want to the police to do nothing. LE should force her to resign and be recalled from office. Congradulations to the law enforcement leaders who replied to her remarks, she needs to be told that she isn't above the law or make comments such as she did about the criminal justice system being racist. She tried to pass herself off as Native American Indian when she wasn't in college. She is a BIG PArt of theproblem in Washington,DC. She needs to be removed from office.

Skiman94 @ 9/12/2018 8:10 AM

It's a shame the only ones that can speak publicly are chiefs who are mostly untouchable. Most police chiefs in Massachusetts can't speak out, or they agree in public with Pocahontas. If they didn't toe the same BS line, they would be quickly shown the door.
