An incident at two different locations in Kansas City (MO) left a suspect dead and three officers wounded with not life-threatening injuries, according to Fox News.

The incident began on Saturday night, when Kansas City police officers located a suspect — who had been identified as a "person of interest" in the July 6 murder of Sharath Koppu, a 25-year-old graduate student at the University of Missouri in Kansas City — at local motel.

The gunman opened fire on police, striking two of them. Officers returned fire, but the assailant fled, according to TIME.

Police later located the man barricaded in an unoccupied house, where a standoff ensued. The assailant emerged from the house, opened fire again, reportedly striking a detective.

Officers fired back, fatally wounding the gunman.
