A Locust Grove, Georgia, police officer was shot and killed Friday morning while backing up Henry County Sheriff's deputies who were serving a failure to appear arrest warrant.
The two deputies were also shot. One was hit below his ballistic vest and is reportedly in serious condition at an Atlanta hospital. The second deputy was saved from serious injury by his vest, Henry County Sheriff Keith McBrayer said in a press conference.
The suspect was killed, reportedly by fire from one of the wounded law enforcement officers. He has been identified but his name has not been released.
The names of the slain Locust Grove officer and the two injured deputies have also not been released.
McBrayer said the deputies were serving the warrant when they ran into trouble and called the Locust Grove officer in for backup. The sheriff said all of the shots were fired inside the residence.
The deputies serving the warrant had "no reason to expect the suspect would be violent," McBrayer said.
Multiple agencies, including the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Locust Grove and Henry County police departments, are investigating. An agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also on the scene, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
