Baltimore Residents Blame Record-High Murder Rate On Lower Police Presence

January 02, 2018  |

For the third year in a row, Baltimore, MD, has had more than 300 murders, reaching a new record of murders per number of residents in 2017.

Some residents attribute the high murder rate to relaxed police patrols in the city following high-profile cases of police brutality, saying officers have backed off in neighborhoods, like the one where Freddie Gray was arrested, reports NPR.

The Rev. Kinji Scott, a pastor in Baltimore who's held positions in local city government, says the opposite needs to happen.

"We wanted the police there," Scott says. "We wanted them engaged in the community. We didn't want them beating the hell out of us, we didn't want that."

He's among activists who are calling for police reform to reduce the violence in Baltimore and several other high-crime cities across the U.S. that he says haven't seen change. That change begins with a conversation between the communities directly involved, Scott says.

"We need the front line police officers and we need the heart of the black community to step to the forefront of this discussion," he says. "And that's when we're going to see a decrease in crime."

Huh, any people don't see the correlation between what's actually happening what needs to happen is an officer tells you to do something you do it you don't second-guess him you certainly don't defy what he wants you to do because it puts the officer on the edge of the moment you do that you've created a confrontation not the officer, the officer is only going to respond to the situation after he's lost control. If people would do what they're told then less people would be beat up and then you wouldn't have to worry about police brutality because the issue would soften up and if that would happen police wouldn't feel the need to leave the area long they could actually engage the way they're supposed to. It all starts with compliance why don't you try and argue you put the poor officer on edge and unfortunately support guy has been attacked a couple of times he's going to revert to fight or flight mode and unfortunately they're trying to fight. Best thing to do is when a man says get y

Retired NY Boss @ 1/2/2018 6:21 PM

You asked for it. You got it. Don't complain about it.

Lance Biddle @ 1/2/2018 6:31 PM

You don't get to have it both ways, folks. If the community is going to hate and attack the police; you better get used to being overrun by the criminal element.
When I came on, in '73, attitudes were much the same. Back then it was called F.I.D.O. Now it's termed "The Ferguson Effect. Same thing. You caused it, you fix it.

House @ 1/2/2018 7:04 PM

No. You cant have it both ways...complain that the poleece be is abusing you then say hey ! Its your fault this is happening. FREDDIE GRAY WAS A SCUMBAG DRUG DEALER!!!!!!! Those 'people' the poleece be "beating the hell out of" are SCUMBAGS. Any REAL people dont deal with the poleece everyday REGARDLESS OF RACE. CONGRATS BALTIMORE ! you all (or most of you) made it a racial issue...NOW DEAL WITH IT. If you are a decent human being in Baltimore, GET OUT while you can. Its only gonna get worse. BLUES stay safe.

Dan Russell @ 1/2/2018 8:02 PM

So let’s get this straight. Community does not want police in their neighborhoods after Freddie Gray which the officers were ultimately acquitted for. Now the shit heel kids in the community have committed over 300 murders and the community who did not want the police now want the police with no force used, ever. Good luck to the good citizens of Baltimore, I would conceal carry at all times and fortify my house if I had to live there. What a joke.

Hahahahahahahahahahhhhahahahahhahhahahahahhhahahahahahhahahhahahahhhahhahahhahahahahahahahhahahhahahahhahhahhahhahahhahahhahahahahhahahahhahahahhahahahhahahhahahhahhahahhahahhahahhahahhahahhahahhahahahhaha....if you cant tell I'm ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Robert Hillsman, M.D. @ 1/2/2018 10:56 PM

SO let me get this straight ...the BFA mayor says "they have the right to protest.\it's their 1st amendment right ! this as they burn down the neighborhood! Hoe u like to be a store owner in that city. It's really VERY SIMPLE..."COMPLY...DON'T DIE..." After the arrest, u can have ur day in court. BTW I thought I read they were moving state troopers into Baltimore to supplement the underpaid and decimated (in numbers) police department bec/ so many left after determining they had no support from up top????

M @ 1/3/2018 3:52 AM

This is a fundamental of policing that is lost. Taking ownership of your community. Identifying and patrolling line areas to protect society. Society blames police, police blames society, so true policing no longer exist. No leaders. They call it change; business and politically minded to fulfill their agenda. All You end up with are the monitors and the monsters. Policing has become a political business.

I am now retired, but you don’t know how many times I tried to talk a violent person down. Then have to go hands on. I worked the VA hospital in Detroit and we dealt with no taser. Pepper spray PR-24 and then the ASP. Had to draw pistol twice for armed robbery suspects. Did not have to shoot anyone. Pastor get your head down to earth and realize that the devil is on this earth and ride with the officers some time and see what they deal with.

David R. McConnaughey @ 1/3/2018 7:27 AM

You mean there are consequences for actions? Why, that's not fair! You shouldn't have to lie in the bed you make! I'm gonna go cry big crocodile tears for Baltimore.

AZBIGDOG @ 1/3/2018 8:09 AM

Sorry Baltimore. Officers are not going to risk death or serious injury to follow stupid expectations of them not being allowed to match force with force or more force in order to make an arrest. You don't want to be beat up, you are too stupid to understand that choices to resist or commit crimes you will be arrested for are how you get arrested.

John Chojnacki @ 1/3/2018 9:30 AM

Baltimore, grow up! Have all the adults left town. You make coming from Chicago look good

Sgt Jim Duncan (Ret) @ 1/3/2018 9:52 AM

Listen as the saying goes “ppl sleep well at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their part”. That’s the thin blue line, the few who “Hold Fast”.
As far as the police go maybe the good pastor who made the comments about “The police beating the hell out of us” can name just 5 soccer moms or dads taking the kids to school or practice whereas the police stopped them and “beat the hell out of them “ for no reason?
Also maybe the good ppl of Baltimore might want to reconsider their unjust critism of police?
Maybe the gang members, predators, convicts, thief’s , rapist, & yes lots of murders should fear the police? And the na-sayers need to stick to what they know?
Let the police spread fear among the bad guys!
Stop kicking your best friends Baltimore !!!!

Major Pain @ 1/3/2018 4:11 PM

Congrats BAL, you got what you wanted, now let the parasites feed off your community.

Wes @ 1/3/2018 5:07 PM

You are reaping what you have sewn. I suggest you get the Black Lives Matter folks to start patrolling. You do remember "Pigs, fry 'em like bacon", throwing rocks, and pieces of concrete trying to hurt the police in Baltimore?

Ron Martinelli @ 1/6/2018 8:51 AM

Absolutely accurate and great responses here. Here's my newest column that I think factually explains what is happening not only in Baltimore, but in ALL of the 30 most violent cities in America. Read, enjoy and please share.

Baltimore, population approximately 630,000 and they have had 300 plus murders each year for the past 3 years. Baltimore you do not have a high crime rate, YOU HAVE A WAR OF ATTRITION. Pack your bags and move, Afghanistan, Iraq or Iran is safer than Baltimore. To put it plainly Baltimore has a death every day of the week except Sundays. This is a national crisis and you all had better start recognising it as such.

William Simering III @ 1/11/2018 4:17 PM

It is not up to the politicians and police alone to fix the murder rate, it is going to take community involvement. The community has to be willing to force the change, it that does not happen, nothing will change! Regardless of the color or ethnicity of a community, if it is crime ridden, the citizens have to step up to the plate and want the change. Police can only do so much. And as much as politicians talk, they are just blowing wind!
