MS Officer Shot, Suspect Killed During Highway Standoff

A Mississippi officer was wounded and a suspect was killed in a standoff on Interstate 55 near Senatobia Sunday afternoon. Authorities say the incident began when the suspect refused to stop for Hernando police, triggering a pursuit.

A Mississippi officer was wounded and a suspect was killed in a standoff on Interstate 55 near Senatobia Sunday afternoon. Authorities say the incident began when the suspect refused to stop for Hernando police, triggering a pursuit. 

The man's identity has yet to be released. The pursuit ultimately involved Hernando, Senatobia, Panola County and Mississippi Highway Patrol officers.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said the suspect wrecked his car, which led to the standoff. Shortly thereafter, the suspect and officers exchanged fire, and the suspect was fatally shot.

The wounded officer's injuries are said to be non life-threatening, the Clarion-Ledger reports.
