NJ Officer Dies 6 Days After Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

A decorated and popular North Bergen, NJ, police officer has died, six days after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound, township officials said.

Sgt. Alexander Vazquez, described as "kind, caring, and dependable," died yesterday, a post on the North Bergen Police Department Facebook page said.

"It is with a heavy heart that we reflect on the fact that today we lost our friend, our brother, and our Sgt. Alexander Vazquez," the Facebook post said. "Alex was kind, caring, and dependable. He always would greet us with a smile and back us with his strength."

On Oct. 18, police responded to a report of gunfire inside a vehicle on Durham Avenue at 9:30 p.m. and they found Vazquez, 32, who was off duty, inside a parked vehicle suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, township officials said in a statement.
