An off-duty Baltimore police officer awakened Monday morning by an armed burglar inside his city home wrestled a gun from the man and fatally shot him with it, according to Baltimore Police.

The officer was not hurt. The suspect was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Neither was immediately identified, reports the Baltimore Sun.

The officer called 911 about 11:30 a.m. and alerted emergency personnel to the shooting in his home in the Frankford neighborhood of Northeast Baltimore, said Capt. Jarron Jackson, a police spokesman.

The officer was home alone at the time of the shooting, Jackson said. It was unclear how the suspect gained entrance, but that is under investigation.

Once inside, police believe the suspect confronted the officer and demanded money from him before the shooting, Jackson said. Police do not believe the suspect fired any shots.

A weapon has been recovered, Jackson said.
