The sun was setting Monday night as a crowd gathered around the body of the young man lying on a South Side Chicago sidewalk, a blue blanket covering everything but his white sneakers.

Chicago police said the man, identified by family as 23-year-old Devonta Dorsey, was shot in the head by a gunman who approached him around 7:40 p.m. Monday.

The attacker fled in a car, and Dorsey was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.  He was among six people shot in Chicago over an eight-hour period Monday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Some of the men in the crowd shouted at police about the city's persistent violence.

"Where were you all when this happened?" one man asked.
