Louisiana's attorney general said Wednesday the state will launch its own investigation into the shooting death of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge Police last year.

Attorney General Jeff Landry, a Republican, made the announcement shortly after the Justice Department confirmed it would not pursue federal criminal charges against Baton Rouge officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II, who were recorded on video in an altercation with Alton Sterling.

Landry said Louisiana State Police would conduct the investigation for possible state criminal violations, US News & World Report says.

The officers said Sterling, during the incident, reached for a gun that was found in his pocket.
