Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Detectives investigating the murders of two homeless men sleeping on the sidewalk in downtown recently used a mannequin as a decoy to lure a suspect.

Police report that after the mannequin was placed on the sidewalk, covered with blankets and positioned to resemble a homeless person asleep on the sidewalk, a man attacked it with a hammer in the same manner it is believed the victims were killed.

The suspect told police he knew it wasn’t a human. But homicide detectives who staged the mannequin scene say they believe Shane Schindler, 30, was out to kill.

The incident occurred on Feb. 22. Schindler first appeared in court last week, he faces one count of carrying a concealed weapon, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

Investigations in the case continue.
