Sgt. Alvin Adams of the Wood County (OH) Sheriff’s Office died Saturday morning after an apparent accidental discharge of his personal weapon, according to Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn.

Adams, 56, worked as a jail sergeant at the Wood County Justice Center and has been part of the force for at least 12 years, Wasylyshyn said Saturday afternoon.

The accidental gunshot took place outside at Adams’ home in Grand Rapids. He was off duty at the time and the weapon was not his department-issued firearm.

Adams reportedly was shot in the side and yelled for his girlfriend to call 911. Adams was taken to Wood County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Sentinel-Tribune reports.
