In light of the tragic events that occurred over the weekend, where multiple law enforcement officers were targeted and attacked in Texas, Florida, and Missouri, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) National President Nathan Catura issued the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the officers and impacted departments in Florida and Missouri, as well as with those of our fallen brother, United States Marshall Service Deputy Commander Pat Carothers.

"It is unthinkable that these events have become such a frequent occurrence. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial reports that this year alone, targeted shootings of law enforcement officers is up over 60 percent – within just the first three weeks of November, 10 law enforcement officers were shot and killed in the line of duty.

"While law enforcement officers willingly accept the inherent dangers that come along with the ultimate responsibility of protecting our nation, a new dimension of risk is added when they must also be concerned that they will be targeted for simply being in uniform. It is hazardous and demoralizing to the brave men and women who are dedicated to protecting the American public.

"A negative perception of law enforcement that has been perpetuated by some has no doubt contributed to these attacks. It only serves to embolden a fringe ‎that gains support from this kind of rhetoric and empowers them to act on it. Our nation was founded on the rule of law and that rule starts with law enforcement officers, and we must support our men and women in uniform who work to ensure peace is maintained in our country."
