Rap star DMX has expressed his gratitude for the police officers who saved his life after he was found unconscious outside a Yonkers, New York, hotel in February.

To return the benevolent act, the rapper gave a free show on Oct. 21 during the annual “Toughman Competition,” a charity boxing event for the police and fire departments of Yonkers. For the 45-year-old, the life-saving experience was a stark contrast to his past run-ins with the law.

“There’s a few officers here tonight that, on Feb. 8, saved my life,” he said during his performance. “To go from at one point running from the police to get away from what I was doing to having police save my life. True heroes. And I’m not speaking from what somebody else told me or someone else opinion, this is my personal experience.”
